“At this stage of my career” is the biggest throw away line in the game at the moment used by players to justify “I just want more money”. It doesnt matter what stage of their career a player is at, they always seem to trot out this line. Just be honest and say “I’d like to stay at Cronulla but I feel like I’m worth more money then they’re offering (‘whispers’ even though I’m already paid a motza and can afford to live comfortably for most of my life already hehehe)”.

I actually think a lot of people would respect the brutal honesty instead of him trotting out the old generic lines that no one believes anyway.
100%
BHU was very honest and placed a bit more “loyalty“ into his decision (not just all about the coin).
I’m happy to let him go provided we are being fair with our offer and he still wants to go to a much weaker club, to play for “a coach he really respects” (but unlikely to play for as the coach is already half way out the door) then so be it.

If you sign with Tigers you sign knowing there is a very good chance you have a rookie coach next year…. maybe he’s banking on Bomber

Where the **** is your "career" at that its beneficial to your "career" to leave a club on the up to head to perennial losers, spoon faves cluster**** who haven't played finals in a decade & don't look within cooee of a win?

The point where your only competitive offers are from pleb clubs as havent been good that good clubs want you. So it’s stay on a fair rate or leave for a payday to a dodgy club.

Tigers would actually have to be the worst club to go to* as currently their roster only gets worse not better.
*dogs roster stronger but coach is a mad **** you could be dropped for no reason any week

Don’t see how he is worth that much. He isn’t that far better then a slew of other second rowers worth 250k. If they are offering more then 500k hoping we miss out.
I said playing consistently like he did the week before.

Not sure how many 80min backrowers are on $250k mate. My guess would be close to zero.

Reckon we offered around $400k
His manager will want $550 / $600 based on what Tigers paid for Papali'i
Yeah those numbers would be roughly around my guess too
Over 500k we’d be better looking elsewhere although options are a bit thin - at that $ though there’s a handful of guys you could get 2-3 of and expect to competently fill the spot.

It’s a position we don’t really have any up and comers either, unless Calquhoun converted. Probs only other bloke I can think of is the Luke Lewis looking guy in Flegg, think he is the captain. He’d be a good few years off you’d think.

Forgot tigers are getting Papali’i until was mentioned in this game… good replacement given two they are losing among their best. Has he played mostly right though?

I didn’t say the other 2nd rowers were 80 minute players. Also…..I don’t think 250k is enough to secure Nikora and he is def worth more then that, however more then 500k seems super expensive and is desperate club type of money (like tigers)

Considering…….

Next season Finucane, McInnes, Talakai, Wilton, kaufusi are already on the books.

Also Williams hopefully (as far as I am concerned) who has been more dominant then Nikora for the last 2 years…will get signed.

I don’t see a massive shortage in the back row that we are paying massive money for a second rower who has been average for the last 2 seasons and has had 4-5 decent games come contract year.

It’s an interesting one, re-signed mid rookie year. Was in good form, 220-280?
Remember half players in nrl are on 180k or less but I could see a bit of a bump up given form and promise.

You rarely see numbers published around these sorts of contracts so it’s kind of hard to get a read. Wouldnt blow my mind if I was off 50k in either direction tbh

Always genuinely surprised when people hold it against players for looking to cash in on their next contract.

Not only is this something that happens in everyday jobs all the time, but football careers are naturally short.

If you’re good, and you’re lucky you’ve got what 12-15 years max? Careers post football unless your very good and extremely lucky, are seldom profitable also so absolutely players should be looking to cash in where possible.

Last years sharks forever, player of the year voting!!!

A bit surprised……Nikora really was MIA, whilst not contract year.

Give me a “cheap” Williams! He is nearly 5x the player!!!!!!

Play Talakai in the second row. Still on an edge and can be destructive there.
Might have to. Only team I can think of with good 2nd rowers to spare is Canberra. Meanwhile Panthers have about a dozen gun centres apparently.

Angus not tied up yet as far as I am aware. Rumoured to have signed twice but nothing confirmed I’ve seen.
He can be a beast would be good at right price and could be enticed by Fitz perhaps

Gus is a freak and would be worth every penny. I'm pretty sure he has outwardly said he isn't going anywhere though IIRC.

Yeah especially if you could get him sub 700k
Interest in him staying but some competition coming through much cheaper and rumours of signing twice seemingly just that.

Other options aren’t great.

Matterson can be strong but is a big headknock risk, not great as a Graham replacement…
RFM another who is an injury worry, could be good price and one of dogs best before he went down.

Next tier down you’re looking at a Davey, Murchie, Stimson, Garner type who would be okay as a 3rd but you’d want something better. Elliot I don’t want at the club.

Some prospects: Dunn has some skills (former 5/8) but would be coming off an ACL.
Topine (grew up in WA) has decent hands and defence - played some hooker for dogs last year out of necessity. Aus school boy captain, Dogs clubman of the year last season at 20.
Probably a year or two off still (and obviously unproven).

Presumably there is a dev squad or uncontracted Cup player around who could be a depth option too but I’d def be interested don’t Topine if we could get him on the depth chart.

I think Davey and RFM are both decent value options. Are we sure Talakai doesn't have a home in the second row? He probably has been too good to move. It could quickly become a problem position for us if we let nikora and wade both go.

He’s going so well I’m reluctant to move him.

But for lack of better options we could def shift him to edge and go back to Tracey centre (opportunity for Iro or Lualua as next man up and Ronnie still an option as backup too).

RFM bordering on injured too long now, not sure what the go is but it’s a big concern. If he can get back into action soon something like him, Davey/Murchie and Topine + Teig has edges pretty sorted without a massive outlay.
