Thought he handled himself really well with the ball in the first half. Had some big issues with his goal line defence which were poor even for a half. There's signs he can play both sides of the ball, we just need to see him do both in the same game for 80.

The one thing I'd asked for before the game was effort, and he gave that

Wish you asked for a win

Hes good at getting the ball into the ingoal. And is developing a nice kicking game. Some of his decisions were questionable but he never stopped trying

Good article on Trindall

Trindall confident in guiding Sharks

Troy Whittaker • AAP

January 27, 2022 12:52PM AWST

Braydon Trindall feels equipped to take charge of a new-look Cronulla team alongside Nicho Hynes having benefited from an extended run in first grade last season.

With star recruit Hynes guaranteed a halves spot, Trindall and veteran Matt Moylan are seemingly competing to partner the former Melbourne playmaker under new coach Craig Fitzgibbon.

While Trindall has only played 23 NRL matches - including 10 straight in the halves to finish 2021 - the 22-year-old makes no secret of his desire to establish himself as a starter.

"One hundred per cent. After last year and getting those games in, I've moved into this year pretty confident," Trindall told AAP.

"I'm just putting my best foot forward at training and I guess we'll have to see what Fitzy decides. Last year I got 18 games throughout the year and most of them were starting.

"The boys that I played with gave me a lot of confidence as a young half to really be able to step up and play that role now. I think it really developed my game."

Trindall said the Sharks had been "chopping and changing" positions so far in the pre-season but he's already begun to form a combination with Hynes.

"He's a really good player and he's really upbeat with everything he does," he said of the newcomer.

"I'm learning a few things off him and working with him. It's been going pretty well."

If he doesn't get the number six or seven jersey against the Raiders in round one, Trindall would happily play off the bench at dummy-half or lock and bide his time.

Fitzgibbon put faith in Trindall before he'd officially picked up the clipboard at Cronulla, signing the youngster until the end of 2024 in June and allowing the experienced Shaun Johnson to move on.

Moylan, meanwhile, was given a one-year extension to find fitness and form.

"Knowing that I'm part of his plans for the future was a big relief for me. I can just focus on my footy now, I feel at home at this club," Trindall said.

"It felt good knowing that he was backing me."

As Fitzgibbon preaches the importance of thorough preparation, big-name recruits Cameron McInnes (St George Illawarra) and Dale Finucane (Melbourne) are unsurprisingly leading by example.

"When it's not even full-on at training, they still do it full-on," Trindall said.

"It's crazy how hard they train and it's just the people they are. They take it from training and put it on the field. It's really upped the standards of the club.

"Everyone's giving it back to them and having a crack at training.

Hope this kid takes off this season when he gets a chance.
He gets a chance tonight, a huge chance. Someone even wrote an article about it: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-02-11/braydon-trindall-all-stars-cronulla-halfback-race/100823738

My best case scenario, Trindell plays amazingly well, and secures the halfback spot. I think we are better served with him at 7 and Hynes at 6.

I would be very happy to be proven wrong, but having a halves combination that features Hynes or Moylan at 7 does not fill me with confidence for this season.

Interesting that Fitz felt Nicho, Trindall, Mozza, Brailz and even Wade were general play kicking options. That doesn't help choose a half...

That’s not an issue
Would rather have more options and pick the best half than be hamstrung to pick someone just because they are the best kicker

So handy to have many platers with kicking ability with a game that NOW thrives playing heads up footy to be successful

Good scrapper. Good kicker. Reckon Albert Kelly is better though.
Watching the game through, Kelly didn't anymore than what Trindall did.

With all the chop and change in the spine for the Indigenous team, how could any player really adjust. Their game plan was a mess.

Kelly is just faster, more elusive, and more able to create something from nothing.

Tough defender these days too.

Doesn't mean that Trindall isn't a good player, just think Kelly is a different class.

Mmm the only thing I thought was worth while from Kelly was the 40/20, then he spilt the ball, so did Trindall previous.

They even moved Hynes from attacking on the left to the right to cover Trindall's spell on the bench. It was just a mess to be honest, swapping halves and fullbacks mid game.

I think the issue I have with Trindall is that he is a confidence player.

He doesn't really adjust himself well when the tide changes nor when he causes an error. But there were times his short kicking game were pretty neat and his bombs were decent.

His defence is solid, hits hard and sticks.

It was a shame they started moving around the spine, especially when Hynes, Trindall and Kennedy started to look in sync.
