To me he always looks like he is 15 but he was good tonight. Hopefully will get better as the weeks go on.

The Sharks had a 7-tackle set at the 11 minute mark of this game which shows 1) why Brailey is such a good player, and 2) where the team need to improve.

After 3 hit ups Brailey engages markers and finds Finucane who uses Toby. They make 20 metres. This sets up a shift and the they make another 12-13m. Brailey then scoots when the markers split, makes another 15, takes the ball to the line and looks for runners. This is where the spine players and the players around the ruck should be pushing forward (Jack Williams was really good at this in 2021).

From the players around:

- Matt Moylan pushes up exactly how he is supposed to, but Brailey steps away from him
- Dale Finucane stands still
- Nicho Hynes pushes up but instead of pushing in to a hole, he stops
- Will Kennedy is moving at walking pace, and then follows late to get the offload

Brailey then passes to Wilton on the last, who is tackled a couple of metres out. This is something people have been critical of, but I reckon this was tactical from Fitz. They are trying to isolate the new halfback with a 1-on-1 against Wilton, and worst case they give it to the Raiders to ruck it out from a corner. The problem was - Sharks halves were not even in the picture, and everyone on that side of the ruck are standing still The Sharks all knew Wilton was getting it - but unfortunately so did the Raiders.

It starts at 16:40 in this video.

Think the Wilton last tackle was by choice 2.
Ending a set 5 out & 5 is going to be what every team aims for.
It allows teams to risk giving away a penalty knowing worst case I give away a penalty and the opposition find touch and start 25 out with set defence.
Best case you get away with jumping early or extra time in the ruck to then set up dominance for the next 2 sets.
Making forwards make hard meters out of their own end is more tiring than repeat sets imo.
So if your not set correctly on the last take the line on and aim for the corner.

Not sure if Hynes pulls up because of the dummy, or is only shown a dummy because he pulls up.

Ronnie and Katoa barely even try to take attention of defenders off Wilton on the last.

Also Wilton took hit up 3 that set, including his first one where he only made around 8m but got quick PTB that lead to good meters next play.

The idea to make them start their set in the corner normally means you try and keep them there.

Sharks gave up 50 metres in that next set.

If the plan is to make them start their set on their line without us trying to get a repeat set, then I’d rather spread the ball wide and see if you can get an overlap somewhere. If you don’t, then you take the tackle on their line.

Sending a forward to take a settler on their line is silly.

Last tackle should always be go for a try or get a repeat set.

I love reading comments on here where people think they know more than the coaching staff. Amuses me no end. :)

I'm not sure too many are doing that. I was just calling out that there was a bit of frustration at Brailey (and Moylan) for doing things that looked like tactical decisions by the coach. You can disagree with the tactics, but don't blame the player - he's just following instructions.

Brailey was conducting the team really. Thought his work here has been severely underrated.
I reckon he has the best service in the game, too. Crispt as an Autumn morning in the mountains, straight off the ground to the chest. Beautiful.

I think Brailey (quite sensibly) was looking for Nicho, who just didn't take the opportunity to hit the afterburners through the huge hole Brailey created.

The whole team looked stilted, like they were really trying to focus on their set ups and shapes. That's my reasoning on why Nicho wasn't present for opportunities or following the play as much anyway. Same with Kennedy. Moyza looked like he just said 'fudge it, i'm going in everyone!' and just started playing footy in the final quarter.

When they did manage to get into a shape it looked pretty good. Still clunky, with some ordinary service from the halves, but signs of life.

Yep.

Nicho was definitely looking away setting up the next play when the ball was played.

Well we did have Josh Hannay in the coaches box

Anyways whether it is pre-planned / tactical or spur of the moment heads up we are an immensely better looking team when Brailey is firing

My take on Brailey playing the way he did, and I have said it before, he doesn’t suit a grinding football team.

He suits a flowing team that allows him to use his speed around the ruck.

Presumably got handed the clipboard a few days out and immediately shouted 'forget everything we worked on the whole off season'

I would be impressed if he did anything at all beyond fetching Steve some water

On these tactics, I don’t mind them, but has there been a rule change when it comes to hangovers inside the 10?

I absolutely could be wrong but I swear each time we handed it over inside their 10 the ball got moved to the 10m line for the play the ball?

Yeah since late 80s or so you really aren't supposed to be hungover on game day
But the good clubs still get away with it

To answer your actual question that is the case if there is a penalty or scrum or I guess kicked out in field of play on last (not sure about that one).

Tackled on the last should still be play the ball at the point of tackle (+ 1 or 2 meters from walking off the mark)
