This defeat by Cronulla in 1970 effectively knocked out any chances the reigning premiers, Balmain had of retaining the J J Giltinan Shield. Balmain won the 1969 comp in one of the biggest upsets in League History when they beat the star studed South Sydney Rabbitohs.
