JUST six weeks ago Melbourne Storm utility star Maurice "Bobby" Blair was a member of Queensland's State of Origin Emerging Squad.

Worth commenting on the following paragraph:

"(Maurice) Blair and (Will) Chambers are not the only big name casualties. Prominent players in the lower grades include Junior S'au (Newcastle), fellow Kiwi international Krisnan Inu (Warriors), Ben Lowe (Souths), and Daniel Vidot and Will Matthews (St George Illawarra)."

How many of these did we attempt to snare? I don't follow the rumours too well but from memory the Sharks had a shot at Chambers and Inu? Don't recall if we tried Vidot too.

I have often wondered what plays a major role in contractual discussions and sometimes wish I could follow one in it's entirety.

What do players want? The chance to play reserve grade for Melbourne or first grade for the Sharks...Is the hope for a premiership considerably high...Or playing under a particular coach???

If it was me, I'd want the best opportunity to play regular first grade. You need to be in the shop window.

I understand that there are benefits to playing under a top rated coach at a strong club, but it's not much good to you if you spend the year playing reserve grade. I particularly wouldn't want to be stuck behind topline players, that's for sure. In reality, there isn't really that much difference in playing for a "top club" or a "bottom club" in a salary capped league. If it was like the English Premier League, fair enough. But in a close competition like this, there really is opportunity for players to go to the weaker clubs and make a solid contribution towards winning games. It's an added bonus that the "weaker clubs" are most probably going to end up paying you more for your services as well.

I was thinking the same thing but was curious as to whether players' thoughts had changed significantly .

I am surprised to see Chambers, S'au and Vidot out of first grade.
