Hot Take: I watched the Newtown finals recently and Billy’s two clutch plays were luck more than skill. The kick in the NSW Cup final was made to look better because the winger was fast enough to run infield and take it on the full, but otherwise an ordinary kick.

The kick against Burleigh in the final minute was an absolute dud, was kicked in amongst a bunch of QCup players and thankfully the ball took a crazy bounce into a sharks players arms.

I get that you need to make your own luck, but 9 times out of 10 these plays don’t come off, and it just was super lucky that in two Billy was kissed on the xxxx by our lord and saviour.

If he does this in the NRL we’ll all hate him soon enough.

I definitely give him credit for kicking to a bloke he knows is a flyer, and finding him on the full.

You're spot on about the second one though, more ass than class.

I didn't even watch the game and knew that.

Hopefully Sharks do also before throwing around outrageous amounts of money when the time comes.

Still... this blokes gets the ball in the most clutch positions possible. AND pulls of the arse-iest of plays both times. Some blokes make their own luck just through effort. I like that, anyway.

If you want to win on a last moment chip kick from a forward you’re begging to have a bit of luck.
Better to try it than die with the ball.
He kicked it well enough that a bit of luck got the job done which plenty of NRL second rowers wouldn’t have done.
As long as he doesn’t think every 3rd play should be a chip and saves it for when it is needed most I won’t mind.

Not that I think Billy is a guaranteed Cronulla and origin super star but he’s had two solid nrl games and two grand final winning moments - I’m higher in him than Kennedy who had two poor NRL games but a lot of people want to start at fb

dropped down the pecking order behind sorro, williams and talakai

The jump in class doesn't always suit everyone, maybe that's his issue. He definitely didn't step up the way some of his Jets teammates have. We've seen plenty of players in the past that were just always going to be suited to playing the lower grades (or in England). Gardner springs to mind.

Fact is his best chance of making it is as a bench utility, and right now we have a better option in Tracey. We also have a versatile starting 13.

His best option is to go somewhere else.

Don't think he's completely out of the plan yet, but more a victim of circumstance. He (utility) has been picked behind Talakai (muscle) because we already have another utility on the bench and the bloke who is supposed to be our biggest muscle is out.

Season is also 18 consecutive games too (before finals), wouldn't surprise me to see Billy come in a few times while players have a week off.

Long term I think we all agree we have a spot for the taking at 13 and Billy could secure probably not the starting jersey but the bench jersey. Even though he is a little bit older than many when they debut he came in last season and played 4 games, wouldn't be a bad result for him to get around the same again and then be looking to really force his place by his third year in the NRL.
Sorro came (back) to us at 25 with just 5 NRL games under his belt.

And to be fair, we've seen a fair few of the new generation fail to light the world on fire with their first crack at first grade, go away and then return looking a lot better. Hopefully he learns from the experience, works on the parts of his game that were shown to be lacking, and comes back as the Gavin Miller V2 we want him to be

Problem is that he is not a prop, so is not effective when used like one. Sharks were too small against the Tigers and had Soro playing that mobile middle role which Billy played against the Storm, so Billy was just a bench middle. Personally I think the bench should always have one of Soro/Billy on it, but never both.

I'm still wondering why Bukuya can't get a run. He would have been perfect in that bench spot last week. Surely he's got his fitness sorted by now.
