he is the second most followed player on instagram

he has 307k followers, cronulla have 85k

he is literally bigger than our club on stature

a golden boot winner, a freak on the pitch and brilliant off of it

he will bring us sponsors, we can finally tap into the NZ market and will be a huge attraction for players

he is an incredible signing, i cant believe we pulled it off

the fact he hasnt played a game for us, if he had id have him at number 3

Whose no.1, outta curiosity

FMD we are measuring players value by their social media followers now? I get that SJ has a profile which can attract new fans and sponsors but if he stinks it up on the footy field there is no way it will be considered a good signing. If he was that valuable why did the Warriors let him walk? Do they not care about fans and sponsors?

You can interpret the thread any way you want. A signing is a signing. Personally I'm waiting to see on field impact, as I'm judging SJ against blokes that have played and it only makes sense to judge him in the same way.

As a club with no sponsors, constantly dragged down by the media. A players media presence is something that can be of great benefit for us.

No one has even for a minute suggested its even close to the most important metric though, of course his on field performance is. Does that mean people can't discuss other benefits though? I'm sure like myself, on the back of our coverage lately people are just stoked to have a positive media presence.

yes, because footballers arent just footballers anymore

gone are the days where players just train and go home, now they have to do loads of charity, keep a clean skin, get involved in junior footy ect

in 2020, nrl clubs will have to send players every year in the off season to complete the kokoda trail, so there is a lot more at stake than just playing footy

if you believe buzz(vomit) fifita and dugan cost us a sponso(lies) but players are judged just as harshly off the field than on it

sj released a photo on his instagram of himself in a sharks jersey with his fiance and it got 300k in likes, and a lot of them were corporate nz companies

players have just as much or more pull on clubs these days as the administrators

we are on a gold mine with him

Beau Ryan was a mediocre winger however we all put more value on him due to him being on the Footy Show.

Social Media is no joke. The younger generations do not even watch FTA TV any more. They watch youtube and get into social media. It's extremely relevant that he has a lot of followers.

I mean, hot chicks with that many followers are almost considered celebrities in their own right and get money and merchandise thrown at them for being 'influencers'.

Um - that's exactly what has been said here. Obviously those other things are a factor but to suggest that he is one of the best signings in club HISTORY based purely on being marketable is ridiculous.

Yeah honestly I hadn't read peoples comments that way. More as potential for what he can do for the club all round but most importantly on the field.

I've been watching a lot of Shaun Johnson highlights since we signed him. You only see the good parts, I know. But given how quality those highlights are, and how bloody many there are, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the most gifted all-round player we've ever had at our club.
