Ashes / Pacific Champs 2025

In the whole HIA era I thought the one thing that we had got 100% right was stopping the multiple hits to the head on one day.

You cop an obvious heavy hit, it’s a cat 1, no test, your day is done.

How did poor Eli end up copping 3 in one day?

What were the medical staff thinking...and what was Hopoate doing leading with the shoulder in pre game practice?

Lehi just jumped normally to make a catch I thought

The ‘timeline’ as I understand it…

Pre game: copped a heavy knock and seems nobody determined a need for an HIA

First in game: off for HIA which he passed. All normal but worth noting two HIAs ‘in a game’ and you can’t come back on. One done pregame only would presumably have impacted that at team doctors discretion as first one was not in game.

Second in game: obviously all went to **** here

What should have happened?
Someone determines he needs an HIA pre game - doctors very well may not have seen it but someone in charge must have.
And then assuming he passes, although not NRL policy, in line with best practice the doctors should pull him after the second one.

It’s easy to watch the replays and know the outcome and say he never should have been allowed to play but if doctors (who didn’t see it) pass him then no reason not to play him.

Someone needed to get him tested though as step one.

Looks like a Cat 1 to me.

It would seem the independent doctors don’t clock on for work until kick off

Ill just say this could career ending. Whoever made the decision to let him play should never work in this field ever again.
Exactly, the game has let him down big time.

All sports are petrified of concussions, and the systems in place, whilst not perfect, should have ensured he wasn’t put in a position to cop a 2nd and 3rd wack to the head.

Completely agree. I can’t believe this can still happen in 2025, given everything now known about concussions. Its negligence of the highest order and there needs to be dire consequences for those involved.

Geez us!

I just read the article
That’s terrible news and the Tongan team (trainers, coach etc) should be in a bit of hot water irrespective of whether the first knock was before the game or not.

Someone saw it, so the pregame knock should have been reported to the medics as a record which would have most likely ruled him out after the first knock in the game.
I know it was an international but they didn’t act in the best interest of the player at all

IMO there was no way he should have even started the game after taking that knock to the face in the warm-up.
Ideally not
Probably cat 1 on field

NRL obviously didn’t have any warmup regulations in place, like footage could have been forwarded along to independent doc asap
The fact nobody around pushed for an HIA is a concern, someone should have stepped up.
I’ve ruled people out of sport before due to headknock concerns and it doesn’t feel good when they are insisting they are fine. But sometimes you have to be the bad guy and make the call.
