You've gone and bamboozled the forum @Sharky Pete
No idea why, I know there's blokes in here older than me who would've remembered the rugby league version of The Ashes.

I may have only been 6 at the time but 35 years later I still regard the 2nd Test of the 1990 series at Old Trafford (Manchester United's ground not the cricket one across the road) as the Greatest Game of Rugby League Ever Played.

The one where Great Britain had a slender lead with seconds left to play until Ricky Stuart makes a 60m bust and put Meninga in under the posts (always thought had he passed it to ET instead Australia still would've scored) to win Australia the game and level the series at 1-1.

I remember the tours back then, don't remember it being called The Ashes, though.

I was very young so don't have vivid memories but mostly knew them as the Lion tours

Yep it was The Ashes. Think they burned a football and put the ashes in the gold trophy.

It was a common occurrence in the early 20th century for any sporting contests at the time to be referred to as The Ashes.

I think it’s safe to say they just wanted to burn ****

I probably wasn’t quite 5 for that game, but I know the moment well (I have heard Ricky Stewart talk about it and something about how long 7 minutes is in a rugby league game. It’s pretty good if you can find it. I am sure I watched it, my grandfather and I always got up early to watch those Roo tours when we could, otherwise he would record them. Right now I can vividly remember getting a kangaroos jersey on my 6th birthday and being cranky I couldn’t wear it to school that day.

I got a Kangaroos jersey for my 10th birthday a few months out from the 1994 tour.

Used to love those tours myself.

I'm old enough to remember that game but not once have I ever heard the Rugby League Tests between Australia and England referred to as The Ashes.

But good old Wikipedia says that Sharky Pete is correct! Has been called the Ashes since 1908 as long as it is at least 3 Test series

Graeme Hughes & the late David "Thirsty" Morrow talked about The Ashes during the call of the 1990 Test I posted above.

The last time GB/England won The Ashes was in 1970.
