FIFITA EYES KANGAROO JERSEY

AFTER achieving almost all the game had to offer last year, there is no way Sharks prop Andrew Fifita could have anticipated that 2014 would be a personal season from hell.
First, there was the pre-season eye infection that put the 25-year-old in hospital and almost caused him to lose the sight in his right eye. Then followed the prolonged contract dispute with Canterbury that cost him a four-year deal reportedly worth $800,000 a season. Throw in ankle and wrist injuries that robbed him of the chance to help NSW to their first Origin series victory in nine years, and it’s not hard to see why Fifita labels this season the most difficult of his career.
“It’s been the toughest season I’ve ever played in; I’ve never been injured like this,” Fifita tells RLW.
“I had a good 11-week stint and I came out of the City-Country game with a really positive attitude; I thought I played well and everything was behind me. Then the following week the (ankle) injury happened and it pretty much put me out for six weeks, and when I was finally ready to return, another niggling injury came back to me and I was out for another six weeks.”
The Sharks may be out of the finals race but Fifita says he still has plenty to play for, with the 116kg giant determined to regain his green-and-gold jumper for the Four Nations tournament in October and November.
“Playing for Australia is always going to be my goal,” Fifita adds.
“I finished off last year with the World Cup final and hopefully I can still be in that squad. I can’t wait just to prove a point.”
That said, the Griffith Waratah Tigers junior isn’t focusing exclusively on international honours — he is also looking to help the last-placed Sharks avoid their first wooden spoon since 1969. “Our main goal is to get off the bottom of the table,” he says.
