Next target on Thorpedo's radar: Fight Club for charity

THE idea of Ian "The Thorpedo" Thorpe becoming a boxer might sound like a joke but here's the punchline - it is said to be on his radar.

Australia's most decorated Olympian is believed to be interested in a Fight Club contest at Cronulla later this year. Whether or not he has ambitions beyond winning a three-rounder, he would join a long list of athletes who have turned to boxing as a challenge.

Anthony Mundine, John Hopoate, Sonny Bill Williams, Solomon Haumono and Lance Thompson are among league stars who've taken to boxing.

Bulldogs winger Hazam El Masri is also considering a fight when the NRL season finishes and recently retired Sydney Swan Barry Hall is expected soon to enter the professional heavyweight ranks. However, Thorpe, who can command thousands of dollars as a public speaker or make millions from sponsorships if he returned to swimming, stands to make nothing from his pugilistic endeavour.

A motivation for the renowned philanthropist to box could be that the Fight Club supports charities founded by Test cricket greats Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.

The Sun-Herald understands Thorpe was keen to participate in a Fight Club bout at Sharks Leagues Club on Friday night but he couldn't commit to the strenuous training in the lead-up because of professional engagements.

A crowd of 1000 watched local police officers, real estate agents and cafe owners fight in a series of two-minute rounds staged under Boxing NSW rules.

If Thorpe signs on to fight he will be put through 10 weeks of "torture sessions" including sandhill runs, boxing and sparring sessions, long-distance runs, sprints, weights and other drills.

It is similar to the training he endured when he ruled the pool and no doubt Swimming Australia would hope the training might help rekindle his competitive spark to immediately toss out the boxing trunks and return to swimmers.

Cracking the whip at the 46 training sessions he'd be obliged to attend would be Paul Watson, who was the conditioner for the Cronulla and Penrith NRL teams, former Cricket Australia trainer Jock Campbell and Corey Bocking, who is widely respected in amateur boxing circles.

He would also be instructed by world class boxing trainer David Birchell, who looks after world champion Sakio Bika, and Brian Wilmott who assisted former world champion Jeff Harding throughout his career in the 1990s.

Thorpe enjoyed boxing training during his swimming career but three-time world title contender Troy Waters said he would want Thorpe to be fully informed as to the potential danger.

"He has been a world class athlete and a great champion, who I respect enormously," said Waters, who will be inducted into Australia's Boxing Hall of Fame in October.

"But I will say the killer instinct he displayed in the swimming pool is far different to the killer instinct in the boxing ring.

"Boxing has a different mentality to any other sport because it really is body on the line and the reality is that means potentially fatal risks."

Hot goss I heard was that Hoppa is taking on Butterbean in november on the gold coast.

Dont be surprised if it doesnt come off though. Butterbean is notorious for trying to squeeze money out of promoters at the last second, and not fighting if he doesnt get it.

This happened to Big Bob Mirovic a few years back. 15 minutes before the fight Butterbean hit up Angelo Hyder (thr promoter of the night) for extra money or he wouldnt fight. Angelo told him to **** off and kicked him out of the arena

Tough nut to crack

Daniel Lane
October 25, 2009

RUGGED Ryan Waters is only 10 rounds away from a possible world title shot, but the Cronulla brawler appreciates that like every member of the world's toughest trade he's always a loss away from free-falling into the sport's great abyss.

It has taken the 31-year-old Waters 20 tough fights to be earmarked a worthy contender for Cayman Islander Charles Whittaker's WBO [interim] junior middleweight belt. And while that is a great motivation for him to destroy Fijian Opeti Tagi when they meet at Cronulla Leagues Club on November 6, he's also driven by the knowledge that a shock defeat could KO his dream to one day stage a world title fight at Toyota Stadium.

Waters is well aware the fight game is littered with stories of men who had a title shot in their sights but lost it all in the penultimate bout by taking their opponent too easy.

"The Tagi fight is very important," Waters said. "I'm currently ranked No.9 in the WBO, and a victory will get me into the top six. Offers have started to come in from America … Charles Whittaker's manager rang from California … but it is up to me to ensure it all happens by winning.

"Tagi is a tough nut. He has a good record, he's the Oceania Boxing champion, and I am well aware he's coming to Cronulla to fight. I have plenty riding on this, so I am not allowing myself to be distracted."

Waters's crowd-pleasing brawling style - and WBO ranking - has captured the attention of promoters around the world, and his being considered a challenger for Whittaker's title is a mighty step towards that world title fight at Shark Park.

"That's the dream," he told The Sun-Herald. "I've had great and loyal support from the people of the Shire and I'd love to put on a big show for them at Shark Park."

The fighter, who recently became a father for the second time, took his well-worn boxing gloves on his honeymoon to Mexico last February in the hope he'd get some sparring against the South American nation's meanest hombres.

"I just love boxing," said Waters, who defines "putting everything on the line" by promoting his own fights. "I don't feel nervous when I fight, nor do I get pressured by the crowd. I had a good initiation as an amateur … I fought at Cessnock Town Hall and knocked out the local boy in the opening round … and I was lucky to get out of the place alive. That put me on track to deal with just about anything."

However, Waters must improve on his last effort, against Indonesia's Aswin Cabuy, a fight in which Waters had to come from behind to preserve his top-10 ranking.

"By Ryan's own admission it wasn't his best effort but he fought back in the last three rounds [of a six-round bout] to win on points," said his trainer, David Birchell. "I think it was the best thing that could have happened to him. He appreciates there is never an easy day at the office and he's responded well by training hard and being fully focused."

i reckon RJJ will make Green look silly, similar to what Mundine did. Greens always struggled against fast boxers and counter punchers.

Choc never gave green a chance.

Green was all " I want mundine! I want mundine!!" for the 3 yrs leading up to the bout, and mundine beat him easy, as much as I dont like mundine I found it amusing.

I predict RJJ to completely destroy him.

He`s a parra supporter anyway, bugger him.

Green probably is a top bloke, Murph, but that won't help him on Wendesday. I hope he wins, but I don't think he will.

Either way I'm looking forward to it.

i met him in sydney years ago before the Beyer rematch, and yeah he is a really nice guy, very down to earth. Unfortunatley being a really nice guy doesnt neccessarily equate to him being able to win this fight.

Dont get me wrong I will be cheering Danny on, but I honestly think he is gunna get whooped.

Dannys never been the same since his meltdown against Sullivan in perth.

Even though Jones is well past his prime days, he is still way to quick for Green. Jones is still another level above Mundine when he fought Green. And we all know how much Green struggled to contain Mundine and his quick jabs. But Green is saying he is in the best shape of his life, but i spose 90% of fighters say that leading into their biggest fight of their life.
