2026 Sharks Discussion

Interesting question on Reddit - what is the origin of the spirit fingers we do when kicking? Or the ‘meaning’ behind it

It was an American sport thing first right? CSSC brought it in. But would be interested to know how it started in CSSC.

I saw this was from 17 years ago and thought that was ancient history, but it's only 2009 :)

There is no single official date or documented origin for when "spirit fingers" began in basketball crowds, as the hand-wiggling motion evolved organically from cheerleader routines and dance teams into fan culture during the late 20th century.
The motion became a prominent fan tradition through the following avenues:
  • College Basketball Traditions: College student sections began adopting the wiggling fingers (often called "magic hands" or "spirit fingers") in the 1990s and 2000s as a way to distract opposing players during free throws.
  • Pop Culture Influence: The term "spirit fingers" was popularized in mainstream culture by the 2000 teen cheerleading movie Bring It On, which brought the phrase and the specific hand-shaking motion into public awareness.
  • Widespread NBA and NCAA Adoption: By the 2010s, the gesture had transitioned from formal cheerleading into standard fan participation, with student sections frequently combining it with synchronized chants to rattle visiting teams at the foul line.

Are you telling me you've never seen Bring it On?

You uncultured swine...
If I have I haven’t held it close to my heart to recall it in fine detail

On Reddit the answers were things like
- his name was Luke like Luke skywalker so it was to summon the force; and
- it was to summon rain because sharks are from the water

Nice to know the post summoned all two of reddit's braincells

With all this "end of an era" talk I was wondering which players have been at the Sharks the longest.

If we use Fitz's arrival as the cut-off, here is everyone who has been in the system for more than 5 years.

Brailey unsurprisingly in first place (his 13th year with the Sharks).

I think Meninga is a hopeless administrator- but can't really see what the problem is with these comments. Its not as if he flew them over or even spoken to them?

NRL Integrity Unit investigating Meninga over claims he courted Bulldogs duo

The NRL Integrity Unit is investigating comments made by Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga, who has publicly courted top players including Bulldogs pair Jacob Preston and Matt Burton in pursuit of a marquee star for the expansion franchise.

The NRL-owned Bears last week flew a News Corp journalist to Perth to try and get positive publicity for the club.

However, the move has backfired after the Bulldogs complained to the NRL about Meninga openly courting their players, who are under contract until the end of 2027.

Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga is pursuing Nathan Cleary, Matt Burton and Jacob Preston.Stephen Kiprillis
Meninga told News Corp the NRL-owned Bears would “be in the picture” to pursue the likes of Preston, Burton and Nathan Cleary if they hit the open market on November 1.

“There has also been a heap of noise around Matt Burton,” Meninga said. “Jacob Preston, he’s someone coming off contract after 2027, we’ll be in the picture. We will have enough money in our cap to maybe chase a Nathan or a Jake if they come onto the open market.”

Make a new rule because of something tbe Bulldogs did.

First team to complain about another team breaking the rule is the Bulldogs.

This is the most “NRL” thing ever.

Unused 18th/19th men up to round 13. Brackets is how many times they have then appeared for the Jets afterwards.

Jones looking like a fair chance of taking this one out unless there is an injury to Hohepa/Berrell and he ends up being needed to play hooker.

Hohepa still the leader in weekends with no game.

Hohepa Puru 6 (1)
Riley Jones 5 (3)
Chris Vea'ila 3
Braden Uele 3 (1)
Mawene Hiroti 3 (1)
Jayden Berrell 2

Interesting. I remember you did a post a while ago saying there weren't many clashes with NRL/ Jets' games. Wonder why they don't back up?
