Dunno about this.

The NRL is plotting one of the most ambitious undertakings in Australian sports history, with plans afoot to launch the 2027 season with nine matches in different cities around the world including London, Dubai and Hong Kong.

The historic initiative is being driven by Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys, who on Friday flew to London with NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo to kick off a major research mission.

Looks like a bad case of biting off more than they can chew to me.

To be fair to PVL, very few thought that Vegas was a viable idea and, while it hasn’t translated into breaking into the US television market as was the initial intention, it has proven to be a success in its own right as an event, nonetheless.
I’m all for pushing the envelope.
In that regard I also think that the NRL should look into marrying the Pacifika expansion bid with Michael Chammas’ idea of having a side based in Hawaii.
This might sound like final frontier stuff but, if they do their research, this could be the way into the US market that the NRL have been looking for.
- untapped market starved of top-tier sport
- large Polynesian population
- a new time zone tailored to American (West Coast) viewership
- untapped sponsorship and corporate partner opportunities
- a new stadium currently being built that is scheduled to open in 2029.
Etc
Don’t get me wrong, I think we’ll likely see either the Ipswich Jets or a NZ franchise playing out of Christchurch admitted to the NRL before Hawaii or anything like it, but this idea actually has a lot going for it.

Has Vegas been a financial success? I haven't seen any numbers. It's definitely surpassed my expectations though.

Whether it can be called a financial success is yet to be proven to my knowledge.
However, the fact that it has become a PR success domestically (overshadowing the AFL’s season launch) and clearly a hit with those in Vegas who are seeing the merit of have an event that draws in such large numbers from both Australia/NZ and the UK can only stand any more ambitious plans PVL might have for the NRL moving forwards, in good stead.

Nrl should just take stock and nurture the 2 incoming teams and grass roots for the next 2 years. Also keeping an eye on the wayward economic conditions. Lock up the new Telecaste deals and sit tight. No grandiose plans introduced at this stage imho. They have had a dream run, under PVL and the Saaffas watch

I don't think the yanks will get too interested in rugby league.jusr by having a team based there. If they won the world cup (or got into the final) it might drum up a week or two's interest, but that's it. The stage isn't big enough.... If Travis Kelce or Dwayne Johnson bought the franchise we might have a hope.

The fantasy football/sports gambling angle is unfortunately probably the best hope for the game making money out of the States. But I still can't see any companies there being arsed to put in any effort to promote it. We're just a tiny novelty value blip on their radars

I like it.

I feel like it's a tourist even for the cities hosting, seems like a lot of Aussies are keen to travel to Vegas at least.

Bring it on, we always lose round 1 anyway. Players may as well get a free trip out of it to somewhere exotic

Eventually we can rack up a round 1 loss in every major city across the globe, we will be famous for it and win over heaps of global fans out of sympathy who want to back the underdog

If the US is awarded the RL World Cup in 2030, you can believe the idea of basing a team in Hawaii will gather momentum rapidly.
The only real competition for hosting the RLWC appears to be NZ which, granted, that could be used to launch a second NZ franchise in Christchurch.
That being said, every time the Warriors take a game to Christchurch the locals are off the chain and pack that temporary stadium to the rafters so, whenever the second NZ franchise does come about, I don’t think they have very much to worry about.
The US on the other hand will likely become a prime focus of the NRL if Global Round becomes a reality in 2027 and beyond.
