Came across this post in the other forum, and I think it sums up the situation of the NRL well.

Flanno will improve the dragons. They f**king suck. But the world he is operating in is very different to the Sharks rebuild he did.

There is a 17th team in the mix for talent now and the way the player market has become you have to buy 2 years in advance - see us buying AFB in 2023 for 2025. AFB didn't want to go to the dragons in 2025 because they suck in 2023, will probably suck in 2024. When we were bad you could still buy talent for the upcoming season! We signed Maloney in June 2015 for 2016. We signed Ennis in June 2014 for 2015. Lewis signed July 2012 for 2013! Huge f**king difference to what Flanno is faced with now. The NRL needs to fix this stupid **** but for now it actually works in our advantage.

Plus throw in any big name basically has to commute to Sydney or move to the gong - that is a hard sell for a rebuild as the Knights found out for years.
If you have good players, you do everything you can to keep them long-term. The current market is ****ed, and you're not just going to build/rebuild a team overnight. You're better off signing a great player for 1-2 years too many, rather than missing out on them all together.

If we keep investing in quality young talent and show that we are a side that will look after/retain those who perform, we should continue to be an attractive option for players moving forward. Fitz and Mooney are all over this.

Issue is it is what the RLPA wanted for player job security and they are gunna have a tough time winding that back.
It is what it is for the foreseeable future

To your points on the matter @Proud Shark and also relating to what @stalefish said in the Toby thread Flanno is in a similar position to Bulldogs and Tigers.... except Flanno is still at square one.
I don't think it is so much trying to buy a premiership but you swing for every available player who would make your team 1% better even if you think it's not a great value contract and you try and claw your way towards the bottom of the 8 with improved results and players others want to play with. That way when the next player becomes available you have a decent shot, and then if you get them, even better for the next player.

Buying this far out you can afford to overspend to falsely prop yourself up as those guys will be off by the time you have a decent team.

Tigers and Bulldogs are both poised to move forward if they can get better results to go with their topped up squads.

Gus didn't sign JAC 'on fullback money' and play him on the wing expecting to win a prem, he signed him as a marquee signing and popular personality to help him buy the next guy. He'll be gone or renewed for less* by the time they are hoping to be relevant.

Nov/Dec 2020 JAC and Burton sign for 2022
Nov 2021 Mahoney signs for 2023
Jan 2022 Kikau signs for 2023
Jan 2023 Crichton signs for 2024, Oloapu signs immediately
All high demand signings they had to overpay for to start moving in the right direction.

He wanted to come back to Sydney and would have liked idea playing outside Burton, Burton wanted a 5/8 jersey and would have liked idea having JAC outside him. Secure both by overpaying and doing so as early as possible - wave their names in front of Reed and Kikau 12 months later but before they've even played a game.

AFB showed for the top players we may still need to make our move early but we don't have to overpay to make them choose us because our team and success are already attractive, like you say PS

*maybe similar if he's in good form, but without the ratcheting bumps he got.

Yeah it's such a long rebuild process these days. That's 3 years since the JAC/Burton signings, and the squad (especially the pack) is still quite average. That's after many years of mediocrity before that too.

Gus generally works to a 5 year plan 😂

The Tigers would be wise to keep Richo for as long as possible.

Wests Tigers recruitment manager Scott Fulton and the club have parted ways less than a year into his tenure.

Fulton was informed by interim Tigers CEO Shane Richardson on Tuesday that he was no longer needed as part of the joint venture’s restructuring since a front office overhaul that dismissed chairman Lee Hagipantelis and Richardson’s predecessor Justin Pascoe.

Fulton was signed by Hagipantelis and Pascoe last May without the knowledge of then-coach Tim Sheens and his eventual successor Benji Marshall.

Marshall and Fulton had butted heads over several recruitment moves throughout 2023. The son of Immortal and Manly icon Bob, Scott Fulton had led Manly’s shift into western Sydney as a key recruitment catchment, signing players like Haumole Olakau’atu and the Fainu brothers, who then linked with him once at the Tigers.

Wish he'd felt the need to come back to us on the cheap to pay back his **** up.
Same here, so disappointed he's not with us. I know he's been out of the game for a while but I still think he's going to be a bloody good centre. Man he was good on his feet, some of those tries.

Yeah, and he's had nothing but time to develop size and strength (legal or not). Could be anything this year.

Even thought it was a slap in the face to the club (especially so soon after ASADA scandal) to get done in the first place the fact he doubled down and dragged things out probably made it impossible to bring him back.

Not a good look for him to get done and suggest there is more to it then club throws a contract straight back to him when eligible again, and burnt bridges on top of that.

Interested to see how he goes, wouldn’t be too upset if he flopped…

Always annoyed me that he never seemed to take responsibility for his actions, always claiming there was more story to come until deciding that it was all in the past.

Judging from the size of him the only lesson he learnt was don't get caught.

You could argue he didn't even necessarily learn that lesson - appears to have just blatantly kept doing it with no real prospect of 'being caught' on the cards

If he doesn't use PEDs again every chance it is purely not wanting to get punished again rather than any consideration of it being against the rules or having learned anything

Doesn't look as big in that clip as he was, maybe has lost a bit?

He was on the juice all through juniors. No way you can be that much bigger than anyone else. Was a ticking time bomb.
