I find it very weird that the two coaches are part of the same media team. I'd probably stop just short of saying there's more to the team lists than just picking the best sides though... I'd start sounding a bit like @Wiz if I kept going down that road ;)
Slater picked his team.
He dropped Ponga, GagaI, Capewell and replaced them with the players he wanted.

Based on media coverage Fittler didn’t pick the player he really wanted (granted it is the media thou) but in face value, IMO, he has succumb to other agenda’s.

Just to be clear, I don’t think either JDB nor TPJ are origin level players.

Maybe TPJ will have a blinder and put me back in my place……

Well that just tells me that Fittler is weak. The Gibson’s, Beetson‘s, Bennett’s , Stuart’s , Bellyache‘s of the coaching world would have picked the team THEY wanted and just “middle fingered” everyone else…….

If he truely thinks JDB is the player he wants in the side, he needed to grow some and pick him but instead took the easier way out and picked a one TPJ FFS, who I don’t believe is up for it. I don’t think JDB is either BTW, but if Fittler does then he should have picked him.
Who said he was going to pick JDB ?

Depends on how close a call the decision between the 2 it was I guess.

If he really really wanted JDB and “settled” for TPJ, then one of those no nonsense coaches would have had the guts to pick JDB and backed their own decision.

I don’t don’t think Fittler has what it takes to be a good origin coach if he can’t back his decisions and select the team he really wants. He might be a brilliant strategist but if you don’t pick the right cattle, then you will lose more than win.

If it was a 50/50 call, then yeah, I agree with you, it wouldn’t make much sense to pick JDB and have that added scrutiny
This part made me laugh, thank you. I needed that!

I might have missed it but who/where has it been suggested he didn’t pick the team he wanted ?

Who said he was going to pick JDB ?

Andrew Webster said on the radio this morning that JDB was Freddy’s first choice for the TPJ spot, verrrry slightly ahead of TPJ himself. But Freddy went with TPJ because he didnt feel picking JDB was worth the distraction it would bring.

Clearly shows he’s media interested first, any strong minded straight up coach wouldn’t give a f*k about the media and would get who he wants to get the job done

I wonder if he wasn’t a commentator and on channel 9 so much he would’ve still done that

This is what I am getting at.
A coach should pick a team to win not be popular.

Slatter is also a media commentator but was happy to drop a couple of “darlings” to get the W

It will be interesting to see how Origin plays out

So Andrew Webster drew more attention to it to make sure it was in the media and to create a distraction??

Origin is such a hyped up money spinning wank you can bet if certain stakeholders don't like something it'll change.

TPJ selection instantly attracted a heap of attention though

The brain process to decide
the bloke I want to select, who is in good form, who previously played SOO but hasn't since due to some legal trouble that got resolved and he wasn't convicted
would be significantly more of a distraction and media focus than
a bloke in mediocre form with significant discipline issues and also has off-field problems to debut
defies belief for me

Even if De Belin was a 10/10 distraction surely selecting Pangai is a 9/10 at best. Can't be worth not selecting the player you want for that.
And I honestly think selecting Panagi has generated more media focus than selecting De Belin would have.

Yeah I would have thought one of the saifiti boys would have been selected. They have both played okay in Origin and have the potential for some good impact.
