Keeping teams to zero seemed to be our goal which excited me a lot. However, since that Manly game we seemed to let go of that goal.

I agree with you that we have not been seeing Fitzy’s influence for the last couple of months.
He’s the one coaching them so if we haven’t then that’s on him.
Maybe we have?

Our stats for missed tackles and ineffective tackles are much better than last year. Things take time to change. Also our 2 best middle forwards have been out.v

A few things come to mind:

  1. Fitzy lost a bit of influence and with the injuries the team slipped into old way of things (although it still feels much improved)
  2. No influence lost but other teams figured out our attack but we did not have enought time to develop alternative plans - hence the perceived stalling
  3. First year coach, new(ish) team and cultural change = expect ups and downs, it takes time for things to settle and become "muscle memory"
  4. Injuries led to ruck being lost which leads to possession loss which leads to defending more (with a smaller/smaller minute forward pack). It will take time to develop depth but there is light at the end of the tunnel (Hazelton, etc.)
What do you think?

We’ll keep getting better under Fitz but if we haven’t been seeing his influence in the middle third of season maybe he deserves criticism? Bomber and Hannay were never immune, but didn’t come with hype.

There’s probably an element of 2.
New coach and rookie halfback we probably haven’t gone into as deep strategising and different options as we will develop.

3 yes, takes time for team and coach to adapt to each other. But also let’s not forget the NRL is a damn tough comp, you don’t become Penrith or Storm over an offseason regardless of how good your new rookie coach is. That element probably unavoidable.

4 Ive been quite vocal I think has hindered us. Show me a team doing well missing both starting props?
Hopefully Dale stays back in side now.
Eels had RCG & Paulo looking tired last weekend and just got rolled by dogs. Not the only thing you could criticise but it wouldn’t have helped.

How often when a team is going well do you hear about one of the big elements of being a prem threat is to still win your bad games, or ‘they find a way to win’. Penrith and storm have bad games too but more often than not find a way to win. We aren’t at that level yet and lack that killer instinct. Capacity for this stalled because how can you be one of the killer teams playing under cap as we were, and we had some guys who for whatever reason dropped off hard last season too.

I guess I don’t think bad things are because we haven’t had Fitz very long but rather I think we can get better the longer we have him…

definitely slipping into our old ways. errors and silly penalties kill us and keep teams in the game.

agree, the expectation of ups and downs in No. 3. most definitely!!! got too excited at the first good run. injuries don't help.

just hope the boys replicate the victory we had over the GC in 2021.
need to have. good solid win, build F/A.

just don't give away penalties when you have the opposition on their haunches!

hope the boys give the local Coffs ppl an entertaining game!

I just want to remind everyone that the team who was running 16th last week beat a top four/eight team easily so I’m in no way underestimating our opponents tomorrow.
Any chance you can tell that to the 17 before kick off, Parra did a impersonation of us last week thinking they were entitled to the two points by just showing up.

Agreed.

One of the differences between us and the teams you mention is that it seems like whoever comes as a sub/alternative if they have an injury or whatever, that player performs at a certain level. We do not have that yet. Sometimes it is a big drop for us and I think that is a factor too.

We just need some time.

I can cop points being put on us cause you can't keep a team to zero every week but i think it's been the type of trys scored against us that is giving me the bad vibes/flashbacks - ones where it seems as much about concentration, desire and attitude as it is structural or communication

Especially after we get a good lead we seem susceptible to letting some soft try's in and we are giving unnecessary penalties away again

We appear fitter than last season but prob not at the level of penrith or storm who I reckon trainer harder in pre-season and during season than any other clubs

getting troops back will help immensely and yes Fitz and his coaching staff will improve and we are looking fairly safe in 5th position for the time being. That's an improvement on past seasons where we were scraping to get into the 8. We can thank a refreshingly strong start to the season for that and not dropping back to back games.

We have built a bit of a spring board so it's a matter of when we jump off again and how high we can go

I'm going to be watching this one on replay so you'll be spared from my running commentary.

Great day for a game of football today and downing a few beers.

In fact I’d be interested in how many beers our posters will consume in 80 minutes of football.

There are some obvious front runners of course!
