I feel like a cock saying this....but go Roosters tonight!
Couple of win-win games the next two nights.

Roosters/Broncos
Manly/Eels

You want the lower-ranked team to win each game for the sake of the Sharks' ladder position, but you can never be upset about a Roosters or Manly loss :D

Yeah I know, it's almost impossible watching wanting them to win.

Best case would be both teams missing the 8 but I can't see that happening. Manly maybe, not Roosters.

Not on the same level as Burger's grievances with junior league but my 7 year old's soccer training was called off by the coach tonight because it started raining 15 minutes before it was due to start

I'm ****ing livid with this. Kids love getting wet and muddy so it's obviously about the parents.

People are ****ing softcocks these days.

Rant over.

Josh Reynolds back to the doggies.

Wonder if Young Flanno will give him bitchy looks on day 1

Particularly after the grounds have been closed most of the season.

It's Pathetic what this is indoctrinating in kids.Others / Parents should have taken the session
I'll be putting my hand up to coach next year mate, I've had a gutful.

Don't give a **** if parents hate me, as long as the kids are having a good time.

Had this issue with my daughters team.
They even considered forfeiting a game a few years back cos they had 10 players but forecast was for heavy rain!
🤔
I was assisting the coach that season and made my thoughts known that THAT was NOT happening

That sucks - particularly if it is the coach pulling the pin.

My current club is pretty good, but the club I used to be at would pull the pin if we got a 15 minutes storm at 3pm. By 3:15 it would be blue skies and the ground just had a few puddles - but 5pm training was cancelled. It was very frustrating.

Good on you for putting your hand up to coach mate. That’s how I ended up as a coach: the existing one was so unreliable that I just couldn’t deal with it any more. The bloke they replaced me with is just as bad.

#1 thing to know for junior coaches: the kids have all signed on to play THE GAME, so training should mostly be the game. No kid ever signed up to do drills. Figure out ways for your players to learn new things while actually playing soccer. E.g. goals off your bad foot are worth 2 etc.

Also - don't be a dick.

There is a team in our comp who are really bad, and are always short. When we played them, they only had 9 kids, so we agreed they would forfeit - and then I sent two of my best players over to their team and we played 11 v 11 as a scratch game.

The following two weeks they lost 92-0 and 100-0.

Great work coach. You won 100-0 in an u13's game that meant nothing on the ladder. Woohoo! You also just drove 9-10 kids out of the sport.

I've done heaps of junior coaching in cricket and soccer with my young lad and hopefully I've managed to keep everyone happy.

I certainly haven't made training too hard because I am not a qualified coach and I don't believe in all the trendy things people do these days so I keep it pretty simple.

I've given away soccer though, because my young bloke has too. But I had other reasons for giving it away. Most of the parents were pretty good but I had a few who's communication was so bad that I wonder how they get through life. Things like ringing me after the start training time to say their boy wasn't coming or not even calling at all. Game day could be frustrating, I tell them to get to the game at least 20 mins before the start and most of them were rocking up 10 mins beforehand or even 5.

One parent just loved turning up right on game time or sometimes 5 minutes into the game! Repeated requests from me (I was always nice too I might add) were just ignored and the same thing kept happening. And then to top it all off, one of the parents came to me late last year to accuse my boy of bullying his. My boy is no angel but he is not one to do this and has been bullied himself so he knows how bad it can be. For the record, the other parents kid is about as soft as you can get, goes down crying in a normal tackle.

I'll be putting my hand up to coach cricket this year, parents are much better but I did have one family last year who I wondered why they even bothered signing their son up. They never came to training and many times on game days, I'd get a text to say that their son couldn't play that day. Admittedly, he is not a great player and it meant I didn't have to choose someone else not to bat or bowl on the day, but it was just rude and thoughtless on so many levels.

We have a scoring roster as well each week for parents. All of them readily accepted their job, even those who had never done it before, but this family was the exception. Point blank refused to do it and when they did come to games, they'd just sit there and not help with pitch preparation, fielding practice, putting out the boundary cones, throwing balls to kids who were coming in to bat etc.

It's not all bad though, I've had some great experiences with many parents over the years in both codes and have made heaps of good friendships through it all. But those few rotten eggs just make it so bad for everyone.

Interesting - The Storm made a loan play for him too .

Jayden Campbell is shaping for a potential departure from the Gold Coast Titans as head coach Justin Holbrook tries to fit four players into three spots.

Campbell debuted for the Titans during the Origin period last season, and despite some injury woes, has excelled in his first-grade opportunities, and appeared a key cog in the future of the club.

However, with Kieran Foran confirming he will not backflip on the club, it leaves Campbell shaping up to be the odd man out in the Titans spine conundrum, according to News Corp.

The Manly half is expected to slot straight into the Gold Coast five-eighth role, leaving Campbell, AJ Brimson and Toby Sexton to fight it out for the vacant fullback and halfback roles.

Despite being dropped this week, Sexton is all bar guaranteed to don the seven next season, leaving young gun Campbell and former Queensland Maroons fullback Brimson to battle it out.

Brimson, having re-signed through to the end of 2026, makes it very hard to see any other result than Campbell off-contract at the end of 2024, missing out on a starting spot.

The Melbourne Storm attempted to snare the fullback on a loan deal for the remainder of 2022, however the Titans refused the request, needing all hands on deck if they are to dodge the dreaded wooden spoon.

Yep. I’ve found in any group there will always be a few parents who are really poor communicators and/or will turn up late to everything no matter how many times you politely ask to be there on time.

As you know, I keep ready detailed records. I keep track of things like you are talking about (no-shows, texting after training has started, arriving late etc.).

Across my squad of 20 players, I’ve had 41 no-shows at training since February, but 31 of them are the same 4 kids. Most of the other 10 were unexpected situations that the parent apologised for afterwards (e.g. mum and dad both worked late and assumed the other one was home and took him).

It’s possibly the most frustrating part of coaching when you have a really good player who is **** at turning up. You know having him out on the field makes the team measurably better, but it’s hard to justify playing him ahead of a kid who has been at twice as many training sessions, and is always there on time.

We run a WhatsApp group chat for parents to communicate through if their kid can’t make training or a game which seems to help.
I assume you probably run the same or similar.

Some parents just won’t do it though.

In my team about 1/4 of the parents won’t use the group. Some a great communicators but prefer to contact me directly.

This was the same at my old team. Different club, different parents, similar situation. 75% use the group/app, about 15% prefer not to use the group comms but are still good, and about 10% just don’t communicate at all.

I had to call out two parents this year. Basically told them that if they can't be bothered bring their kid to training and communicating with the coach, all bets are off as to whether or not they ever go on the field. This was extreme though. These kids were at 5-6 training sessions each over a period of 3 months.
