NRL have announced an U19 State of Origin game... with a couple of marquee U20 NRL players thrown in.

June 23 at Leichhardt.

Not sure the NRL can seriously justify putting a second team in NZ when the current one has been nothing but a basket case for almost 30 years.

It's weird that they can run plenty of good union teams but no league teams. Obviously they are a union country so there's a bit of a disconnect.

They have so many young players to choose from. Maybe the NRL needs to invest in some meaningful support systems there.

@kiwishark might have some insight.

100%. Warriors should go join the super league. They’re a ****ing disgrace of a team.

I think they should put a second team there, but also give both of them an extra cap exemption for players relocating from Australia for a while. Say the next 5/10 years. Help them attract talent a produce a ****ign amazing rivalry and following for the sport over there. If you could get that going, then the juniors would flock in and the teams could be set up long term.

Some may see it as unfair for the comp but it would be amazing for the league long term. Pretty sure that's what the AFL did to set up the swans back in the day too.

They've had success. Just can't seem to maintain it.

They seem to have a policy of NZ born players first where possible which makes things tougher. Not sure if it's just a supporter thing or the practicality of getting players over there.

Nah that would to be too unfair for people to cop and rightfully so. Not worth the hassle.

I dont think the Swans got a cap exemption when they shifted north from South Melbourne in 1980. I think the COL Allowance came later in the 90’s im pretty sure.

Yeah I wasn't sure of the details but something like that would be appropriate. If they were able to make NZ successful the game would be so much stronger as a whole. Even with the extra support Melbourne and the Roosters probably win at least 6/10 across the next decade anyway.

Talking cap exemptions for expansion teams... didn't he AFL pay for most of Folau's contract at GWS?
