The top 5 is the best finals format, they should go back to it, but never will because of the amount of matches.

As for the Roar article, he’s got his history little off.

95-96 was top 8 from 20 teams
98 was 10 from 20
99 was 8 from 17
2000 was 8 from 14

Campbell Graham fractured his ribs against Roosters making first tackle of the game.
Played through that very well.

I'm going to go ahead and assume Dale's ribs are much worse fractures.

I actually like the top 6 system the A-League uses:
Week 1: 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 loser eliminated. 1, 2 week off.
Week 2: Winners of week 1 face off, loser eliminated. 1 vs 2, winner through to Grand final, loser faces winner of the other game.
Week 3: Loser of 1 vs 2 vs winner of the other game.
Week 4: Grand final.

Suitably rewards the top 2, like they should be and it has the right amount of teams so we are not rewarding mediocrity.

NRL would obviously never go for it because they’d be worried about too many meaningless games toward the end of the season. Which sucks.

This is the one the English Super League used a few years ago. I like it.

But the one change I would make to the current NRL/AFL Finals system is for week 2 & 3 with the best ranked team facing the lowest ranked team.
For example this year week 2 would have been Sharks/Raiders and Eels/South

It's not much fun watching the Cowboys getting talked up when we outplayed them and would have defeated them if we'd shown some game sense.

Ah well.
