I think this look deserves revisiting at some point in the future.
If not as a permanent fixture throughout the season, used in the occasional game where the opposition are wearing black shorts.
PNG are apparently going to alternate between black and red shorts for the Pacific Championships this year so why not do something similar?
Another idea could be for the Sharks lower grade sides (Jersey Flegg/SG Ball) to wear sky blue shorts instead of black like the Rabbitohs do, sporting green shorts, at NSW Cup level.

Ok. Off the back of the blue shorts debate, I give you another…
A lesser spotted Sharkies jersey circa the Super League era.
Having lived through this era I was shocked to discover this item floating around on eBay.
Literally no recollection of this being released nor what the idea behind its design nor the intention of its production was.
Any ideas?

No way that was Super League era.

Pretty sure @Sir Chadley used to play croquet with Napoleon in that get up.

No one is more surprised than me, I can assure you.
Literally have no recollection of this.
I do recall all the Super League clubs playing in very plain/basic jerseys during pre-season before their actual jerseys were unveiled but have no recollection of this release nor the intention behind it at all.

With a new home jersey in the pipeline for 2026, I for one, wouldn’t mind seeing Classic revert to the three-quarter-length sleeve design that they have used for the Kangaroos’ Ashes training/pre-match jersey.
If not for the game day jersey, either for a pre-match/training jersey or for a potential 2026 heritage jersey etc.IMG_7991.webp

Is it a jersey?

Looks soccer. Maybe a training kit for world club challenge in England or something.

Other than that, Super League had a lot of weird of **** in their short existence

It appears to be in the style of the 80’s/90’s Peerless jersey with a similar scoop collar and three quarter length sleeves. It isn’t made by Nike which all Super League teams were at the time.
As I say, I have (at least I thought I did) a very vivid recollection of both the latter years of the Winfield Cup and the Super League era of our game and this item completely baffles me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interesting. We really only had Nike around that Super League era. As far as I can recall.

They had some plain soccer looking kits they wore in trials from memory as well

There is a page on instagram called gallery of league, runs a website that archives all the clubs kit history(the website is down atm unfortunately).

Could reach out and ask him if he knows anything about this

Super League merch was pretty hard to come by. ARL probably told most retailers that if they stocked SL merch, they couldn't have ARL.

I remember going to a SL game* and seeing so much different merch.

I can't even remember who sold stuff back then, Sports Power, Grace Bros/Myer and mum and dad sports shops?

* Never got to see a Sharks SL game, I went to Raiders vs Hunter Mariners 😂

The Sharks wore an all sky blue jersey in the 1996 Super League trials. No photos exist of that jersey that I can find but it was in the same style as this Perth Reds design. IMG_7939.jpeg

It is interesting all these years later that, while many retro jerseys have been licensed by the NRL via Classic and more recently, Tidwell, we haven’t seen a Super League jersey reproduced.
I guess the animosity is still festering away in the background 30-odd years later. 😅

Not sure how it would ever be incorporated unless it was as a pre-match warm-up jersey or training jersey but I would love to see the Sharks revisit the design sported during the run to the final of the 2015 edition of the Auckland Nines. I’ve never really been a fan of ‘busy’ jersey designs but this is a guilty pleasure.IMG_6778.jpeg
