So you want him to come and list the players he is looking to poach from other sides yes? Since when have coaches ever told us the specifics of their recruitment strategies???

How are they letting you down excatly have they removed funding from the junior system? Are the players not interacting with the community and juniors sides? There is so much more to the "Junior System" then not being able to retain a couple of players.

I said I wanted to see the plan, not the specifics

I think Flanagan's plan is pretty simple Tips. He's basically coaching and retaining a solid squad based on a two year plan of making the finals and having crack at a premiership before Gallen and co. retire.

Its obvious he's put together an older experienced squad who have proven themselves in first grade and he is going to keep in this track. He won't take risks, he'll retain solid players like Robson and Morris instead of trying to replace them with players who might offer a bit more and retaining and giving the younger guys a decent go is clearly not his priority, regardless of the fact that potentially they too may offer a bit more.

Steady and solid, little risk taking with no view to the future past the next two years. Thats Flanagans plan. Some people might agree with this. I don't.

So we end up like the dragons (but without the local juniors) - except difference is they had a proven premiership winning coach who delivered.

We have a rookie who is doing whatever he wants with no apparent accountability for the long term damage it causes

Issue I have is that Flannagans team of solid steady players at the end of the day when it comes down to the crunch are not going to seriously compete with the top teams so why won't he take a risk and make a guy like Peachey more of a priority instead of persisting with others.

We already know what Robson, heinington and pomeroy can do so why not:
- give Townsend a go with carney
- give Mills or Mat Wright a decent go since pomeroy is not performing

All these young guys have come up through our 20's and shown that can play NRL but none look being retained

So you want a team of local juniors yes? The same local juniors who can't win a junior comp? The same local juniors who made the finals once in the under 20's comp. Have made the finals twice in the NSW Cup? Who have no success in the Harold Matthews or SG Ball comps till this year?

The best players in our junior comps have for years gone elsewhere looking for their chance. If you ask the local juniors who are around 16-18 where their heart is they will say the Sharks but if you ask them do they want to play for the Sharks a lot will say no. Why? They haven't won a comp I want to win a comp.

You say its short sighted to go look for the next couple of years. I say it is long sighted. With a couple of quaility outside backs we have the superstar half in Carney and the forwards to actually win the comp. Win the comp and the flow on effect is massive. The best kids not only in the shire but outside will want to come and play for the sharks because the area is one of the best, beaches, night clubs etc. Sponsorship goes up, membership goes up.

We have the development to make our finances a bit healthier we have the chance to become a glamour club - but it all hinges on on field success.

The plan B is already in action. Look at the success of the youth squads this year a lot of them will be hitting the 20's in a couple of years. If they are successful there in by the end of all our senior players contracts there will be a bunch of 20-21 year olds along with Fifita and Wade Graham ala the mid 90's which produced so many successful years.

You need to look honestly at our Juniors, under 20's is second last, our NSW Cup side is full of Melbourne players and a lot of why we have won 14 out 14. The future Sharks stars are not coming from there. Give it a few years and their will be plenty of juniors back in first grade but the quality is not there now.

The main thing that pisses me off is when we substitute an average local junior for an average non-local on similar money with similar playing attributes. It's like a game of musical chairs with no real advantage. I'm sure the coach sees something in the new player that he has recruited, but I feel that we often just switch players for no real reason. Sometimes I think we would get more out of trying to build a stable culture of players with a link to the place, rather than just chopping and changing the also rans.

The whole junior development thing hardly seems worth it these days though. If we lose all our players at once we will have a **** load of money to go and bribe players to the club. Even though you spend a **** load and it comes out of the cap, it's probably more cost effective than putting resources into a 15 year old for 5 years, only for him to piss off to the club that puts the biggest contract in front of him anyway.

At the moment we are recruiting older players who do not need to be taught the "basics" so we cut down on the intricacies of development coaching and probably save money. They also know exactly what is expected of an NRL player and are probably less likely to have attitude problems etc. Well, that's the advantage I see in the way we are doing things, anyway. But of course, retaining some promising juniors would be nice to spice things up and provide some genuine excitement and hope.

Hamsy, in part I agree with you, you don't just promote for promotion sake but to be a glamour club you not only need on field success you need long term success.

Organisations will only have long term success with a plan or program in place to nurture from within in conjunction with filling gaps by recruitment from outside.

All I want to know is that there are plans or a plan in place for the future to complement the decisions being made in the present and if there's not then god help us on a number of fronts

There are a number of changes that are being brought in mainly on stuff the old board were working on along with Bruno that the new board signed off on.

Shortly a recruitment officer/talent scout should be announced I believe the name has been floating around for a while. This will be the first time in our history we will have a person dedicated to sourcing talent both in our junior system and beyond and bringing them to the club.

Once the development funds come in there will be increased funding to the junior clubs.

Those are two things I know are going to happen but there are other plans in the works for next year and beyond.

Your not listening. If you have actually read any post I've written you will see that not once have I said I want a team of local juniors. I dont buy ino the whole local junior thing.

My issue is that young players that have come through our under 20's program like the ones I've mentioned, and have shown that can play NRL, are not being given a go and are being let go in favour of older boring players.

You are also wrong about our junior teams as well. Yes the under 20's aren't much good this year but in the last 4 years our SG Ball and under 20's have done pretty well making the finals a couple of times and unearthing some good players. None of which it seems will be with the club next year.

After years of not being able to attract/afford players from the top end of the market, we now seem to be an attractive place to come and play. Is that a bad thing? Australian players, SOO players, even NZ reps (SKD) have been linked with us. This was NOT happening even a couple of years ago. I'm prepared to wait it out a few years and see what develops...hell, i been waiting nearly 40 years now.

i dont fear a re-building phase for a while tbh. i just think if we are going down the recruitment avenue, that it needs to be a bit smarter in the next 2-5 years.

this year flanno needs to go all out for a few backs, have a crack at it in 2014, then plan the future, no re-build it

This. I don't get the panic about a rebuilding phase at all.

If you keep doing the same things.......... you come up with the same results........ average....... And we still have a lot players off contract....... and as yet no major signings .... hope he knows what he is doing?!!!!! Could end up with BUGGA ALL.

And the young fellas we had that looked the goods all bloody gonski........ Sounds like a plan.

Ain't that the truth we need some quality in the backs........ a centre or two and a half ,,,,most of our attack and kicks set up by Carnage ... good teams can bottle him up........ unless we have some alternatives.

It isn't rocket rocket Science.
