But seriously I'd rather try and sign a back we actually identify next year for the following season than just sign someone on a hunch he'll come good again and then be stuck with him for the next 2-3 years.

We've already got barba who after 1 season we still don't know if it'll be a good signing

There's also no reason to suggest he will be any good either.

You'd probably invest my money into nokia phones if i gave you the chance, they were good a few years ago too.

Yeah, because athletic outside backs who can play 1-5 and are strong in contact are going be superseded real soon.

No they won't if they're in good form that is.

And i would also argue his ability to play fullback based on his performance this season.

Not much use if he's got the engine of a Datsun 180B though mate. Look he might regain his form but he's lost a heap of earning potential if you ask me. No way he should be getting paid decent coin if you're going to be fair dinkum and take two years of recent form on board.

I'll ask again...how much would you pay to sign him?

All the natural talent in the world is useless if your heart's not in it. I'm not saying that's the case with him but something doesn't look right. It's a big risk unless he comes cheapish imo. Not worth the risk otherwise.

Just need to lock him in a dark room with the ground announcer for a couple of weeks.

I'm a Shark
Why is that?
Cause I have heart...

His 'engine' is fine. He's 23 and underworked if anything given the two year layoff.

I think $375k is about the overs/unders line. $400k is probably what it would take to get in the conversation.

IMO, lots of posters here worry too much about recent form. There's a reason its temporary. Two years door knocking and then playing for a rabble haven't taken away Hoppa's class. As I said above, there's every reason to think he'll revert back to his average performance which is worth good money.

2 years isn't really temporary though AB.

And even in a rabble there have been some good performers in the parramatta team - even our own de gois looked a lot better there than here.

My view is that his level is similar to beales, decent without ever being spectacular. But on the last 2 years and in particular this season he's not near that level at all.

He was relatively good in his first year back. Dangerous with the ball. Defence needs time but will be his strength in time.

He's an entirely different style of runner and defender to Beale and his ceiling is higher. That said, another Beale would be a significant upgrade on Leutele.

When he was at manly i would have agreed his ceiling was higher but not now imo.

We'll have to revisit this conversation in 5 years and see who was right haha
