Oh well, a disappointing end to what had been a promising season.
We achieved alot this year considering most "experts" had us pegged for the wooden spoon. Then you have to take into account the revelation that both Gallen and Carney have been playing busted since Origin. I was shocked to read today that Gal hadn't been able to take part in a training session since Origin 3. The current Origin concept has to go.
Taking all of this into account as well as the fact we had plenty of other injuries to cope with (Gardner, Bukuya, Graham, Pomeroy etc) throughout the season as well as the couple of games we lost due to poor refereeing, our season overall has been a success.
For me the highlight has been our success with the development and the way our true supporters have pulled together to get this done. This, added to the fact that Flanno was able to piece together a team of misfits, rejects and a couple of veterans and take them through to the finals made 2012 a milestone year for our Club.
Unfortunately, the lowlight for me has been the increasing level of negativity and, to put it simply, just plain stupid posting that has become prevalent on this site. I used to look forward to logging into here and often did so a couple of times a day to enjoy the content of the site, which was typified by interesting and intelligent discussions on everything from the Sharks to music.
This has been replaced by constant whining and negativity, the focus of which seems to be to bag our own players or to "troll" other forum members - fellow Sharks fans.
I find it increasingly difficult to bother logging on here anymore, which really saddens me as I know how much had work people like SF, Fitz Mark and others have put into the site to make it a place that promotes our Club. However, I can't see us attracting too many new fans with majority of the content I see everyday in fact, if anything, it gives our critics more ammunition to use against us.
Quoting this post if only in the hope that repetition might see people read it.
Unfortunately Iron, because you don't use asterisks, make reference to a player or coach participating in some distasteful act or slag off at another sf member, it will go largely unnoticed.
Sharksforever has quickly become the first website I go to everyday, and the last, and often a couple sneaky peaks throughout! Lately I've been dumbfounded by the comments some people make. In a recent post a member made reference about Best's high 'try assist' stat. Rather than celebrate this, the next person decided to post that this was because Carney was injured and Robson enjoyed large parts of the male anatomy in his mouth.
Seriously? That's the best way to respond to a positive post? By undermining the first player's achievements and then claiming it was because of those reasons?
I'm tired of it. Like the players, I think I need an off season from this type of member posts.
All I've seen in the latter half of this season is every thread being clogged with which player you hate, how they should never play again and how it's all Flanagan's fault anyway.
There are ways to critique games, vent, express frustration and comment without all the other nonsense.
And, as regards the game, people seem to forget that we were well and truly in this for a long time. Some costly errors and injuries ended our season but to pin all of this on one, two or three players is bewildering. To also make sweeping statements about coaching decisions when you are not privy to the inner workings and information about the team is also pigheaded. I don't expect Flanagan to explain every decision. I understand that decisions are made based on a hell of a lot more information than what I am told and I have to have a certain level of faith in that process.
If coaching and playing was as easy as many of you profess, perhaps you should put your name down to volunteer as one next year. I suggest under 16s or under 18s would be an excellent place to show everyone that you have the skills, mindset and knowhow to lead a team of "misfits (and) rejects" to the semi finals. Let us know who you coach and how they're going. Set up a thread because I'd genuinely love to follow the highs and lows of the team and its players.
I have a feeling we achieved slightly above our potential this year. To get this team into the semis when far better teams with 'marquee players' didn't make it is a testament to this club.
The groundwork has been lay.
