Newcastle Knights v Cronulla Sharks

GREG PRICHARD
July 8, 2010 - 5:30PM

Sunday, Energy Aust Stadium, 2pm
Referees: Tony Archer and Gerrard Sutton
Head to head: Knights 19, Sharks 15
Last clash: Sharks 26-6 at Toyota Stadium (rd 7, 2010)
TAB SportsBet: Knights $1.40, Sharks $2.90
FootyTab: Sharks +6.5

The Knights have raised one last gasp to keep their finals hopes alive. After losing three games in a row, they have won their last two - 6-4 at home against the Eels and 24-16 away against the Titans. They had the bye last weekend, and are four points outside of the top eight with nine rounds to go. Their star player, Kurt Gidley, lifted NSW when he came off the bench to play hooker in State of Origin III, but he will start in his normal position at fullback for the Knights.

The Sharks have done reasonably well through the middle stages of the competition. They have gone win-loss-win-loss-win-loss in their last six games, to at least keep things ticking over a bit. But they really missed their State of Origin trio of Trent Barrett, Paul Gallen and Kade Snowden against the Bulldogs last weekend. They couldn't find the necessary spark in attack, and lost 24-12. The Knights have a poor record at home this season, winning just two of seven games.

KNIGHTS: Kurt Gidley (capt), Akuila Uate, Junior Sa'u, Adam MacDougall, James McManus, Ben Rogers, Jarrod Mullen, Ben Cross, Isaac De Gois, Dan Tolar, Zeb Taia, Cory Paterson, Mark Taufua. Interchange: Matt Hilder, Wes Naiqama, Richie Fa'aoso, Anotonio Kaufusi.

SHARKS: Nathan Gardner, Blake Ferguson, Dean Collis, Ben Pomeroy, Isaac Gordon, Trent Barrett (capt), Tim Smith, Kade Snowden, John Morris, Luke Douglas, Grant Millington, Anthony Tupou, Paul Gallen. Interchange: Josh Cordoba, Broderick Wright, Paul Aiton, Siosaia Vave, Taulima Tautai (one to be omitted).

We ought to beat these ****s and convincingly, again. If the Origin boys all play I'll be ****ing filthy if the 2 points don't come our way.

Its Newcastle mate since pingers become the trend there the bottle-o's responded by getting the drinking age changed from 18 to something more like rides at the show where it goes on how tall you are - if you can reach it you can drink it.

<EDITED>

Newcastle captain Kurt Gidley pulled up from Origin III with a sore shoulder, but is expected to play against Cronulla on Sunday. Hooker Isaac De Gois (hand) still has to pass a fitness test. The Sharks are expected to be 1-17.

Knights v Sharks. Energy Australia Stadium, Newcastle. Sunday 2.00pm
After witnessing Kurt Gidley play well for NSW, God has decided that Bermuda is no longer the most suitable place for weird happenings and unexplained occurrences to take place, and has moved every Bermudans favourite shape, the triangle, to Newcastle. Fitting then, that Cronulla should win this game. Sharks by 12.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS v CRONULLA SHARKS, Sunday, Energy Aust Stadium, 2pm

One thing I like about the poor old Sharks is they always turn up and have a decent dig. It’s won them a sprinkling of games this year and suddenly things aren’t quite as bleak under departing coach Ricky Stuart. It’s a big call against a Knights’ side in the comforts of familiar surrounds but I think the Sharks can grind away for a win.

Tip Cronulla
