So far this season, has there been anyone who failed an HIA who played the next game?

I can't think of any but I am pretty dumb etc.

My immediate thought too, either go to squad of 32, or at least expand the 'tier 2' options and make it easier to select these guys.
(well, maybe doesn't have to be easier to select them necessarily)
Haven't they already?

There was also a proposed increase in the tier 2 cap, which should allow for teams to have more tier 2 players on the books.

Kids will start suing their parent and/or coaches next.
There needs to be a waver signed , all care but no responsibility all the way up to NRL First grade

Frizzell failed round 1. Failed again round 2 (nine days later).

Possibly the final straw for the NRL.

There are systems in place in juniors to stop coaches from putting injured/concussed players on the field.

They are also doing work on a central concussion registry so that players concussed in club games appear as unavailable for school football (and vice-versa). Right now that doesn't exist. Kid could get a head knock on a Sunday for club and play for his school on a Monday. That needs to be fixed.

If/when my players get head knocks I reach out to their school coach directly ASAP to let them know.

Good question

I can't find any from week 1 to 2

Week 2 to (named) week 3 we have Kenny Bromwich, Connelley Lemuelu (Dolphins) and Toby Crouchman (Dragons) who were all not permitted to return to field during week 2 games.

Dolphins played Saturday then Friday
Dragons played Sunday then Saturday

Haven't double checked times but looks like they all would have a later kickoff on the round 3 week so should have time to complete the (now) old concussion protocols before their games start.

Burg is right, Frizell, I didn't check the easy way the first two games of round 1 and missed him. (He did fail HIA round 1 and play round 2 but round 2 he went off with an ankle injury @BurgoShark )

So in terms of the prelim final - automatically out of the GF with a category 1 ..
Do away with Cat 1 reckon. No categories, just let the doctor pull them for a test. They will then either pass or fail that. No need for the doctor watching video to chime in ruling them out himself.

He sees something he doesn't like, he gets them taken off for a test. Easy.
Can't have blokes missing two weeks because the guy watching the video mistakes Dale doing the heavy breathing thing he always does for a concussion or similar.

Does anyone on here know what is involved when they go off for an HIA? Is it purely a verbal test or is it an electrical/mechanical measurement?

I believe it’s a verbal test done pre season that they have to repeat ..

Alphabet and numbers as well as where is the home ground , what time was kick off today etc .

Yeah it's baseline data they use. Isaah Yeo mentioned the other night on Matty Johns; one of the questions/tasks is to name the months of the year in reverse order.

I remember Val saying when he was at the Sharks that he's pretty sure Jack Bird would fail the HIA test without a head knock.
Luckily you don’t have to nail the test, you just need to be consistent with your baseline

:ROFLMAO: Now Kalyn, if a train leaves Cronulla station at 1pm travelling at 63km/h, and another train leaves Martin Place at 1:12pm travelling at 51km/h. What time do they pass each other?

Answer = **** off. Millionaires don't ride trains.

Baseline established.

That's his baseline answer
His in-game assessment answer is 'food poisoning'

NRL players will be mandated to miss two rounds of football if they are found to have suffered a concussion.

That’s the headline detail on a sudden policy change announced by the NRL on Wednesday.

The league is facing its most significant shake-up to concussion protocols in years — coming one day after the AFL was rocked by a landmark class action lawsuit.
Fox are sayng something different

The NRL have introduced a mandatory 11-day stand-down period for category one concussed players, effective immediately.

Category one can be defined as any of the following symptoms; a loss of consciousness, players failing to protect themselves when falling and unsteadiness on feet.

Players who show signs of a category one concussion are immediately ruled out of games and will now spend at least 11 days out of action.

The new rule come into play from Round 3 and it means players can be ruled out of two games if their side has a short turnaround.

NRL website supports this, says this 11 days will apply to any diagnoses concussion.

Also says clubs can apply for an exemption to an NRL appointed specialist in certain circumstances, the most unusual being they must have been diagnosed with fewer than 5 career concussions and none within previous 3 months

It's not something different. All of the articles say 11 days. It is just one media mob sensationalised it to "2 rounds".

Head knock on Sunday, team plays Thursday 2 rounds from now = can't play that Thursday game. That's the only situation where a player will miss two rounds from HIA in an NRL game (though you could get HIA in origin and miss 2 rounds).

It looks like something different from what egg wrote to me. The reason may be sensationalisation, but it’s still different

So you used @egg as your primary source?

This was on nrl.com at the same time as when he posted that.

ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM said: “There is no greater priority for us than player safety. It’s front and centre of everything we do.
“Our current head injury protocols are exceptionally strong. Following a review of the data and the expert advice we have received, the Commission have enhanced these protocols even further by providing a mandatory 11 day stand down period following a diagnosed concussion.”

In exceptional circumstances, Clubs will have the ability to apply for exemption to the 11-day stand-down period, through a review by an independent neurological expert appointed by the NRL. This application will only be allowable where the following set criteria are met:

  • Category 1 signs/symptoms are not observed
  • The player is asymptomatic the day following the concussion
  • Cognitive testing has returned to normal
  • The player has suffered fewer than five previous career concussions
  • The player has no previously diagnosed concussions within the previous three months
  • The player has no history of a previous concussion with prolonged recovery

Looks like for us it’s only HIA in Rd 16 v the dogs with 11 days into Rd 18 v the Dragons as the only possible forced 2 game rest.
