Looks like a incentive for teams to select good players in the pre-season. Remember what a joke it became at the nines with the Bulldogs putting 2-3 of their NRL guys on the filed for 15 seconds.

Should also get bonus points for left-footed field goals or tries scored by players sporting moustaches or mullets.

The NRL is definitely calling the trials the Pre Season Challenge but can’t see they have confirmed that scoring system or prize money

That's true. The schedule and format are definitely confirmed though. NRL.com quotes it and you can buy tickets for those games from ticketek. 18 teams including St Helens. They will play the Dragons first, and then the Panthers in week 2 as the WCC.

A third source is reporting the same info now. Could all be copying off each other though.

A point per lock in the starting 17 would be a step in the right direction

So the trials were always just a warm up run? The point scoring for the club challenge turns it into a farce as anything else. I wonder how many coaches will play to win or use it to trial combos and young blokes

As each year passes they get closer to achieving their ultimate goal, to make the game resemble touch footy as much as possible.

While promoting Origin as the pinnacle, which they want to be as brutal as humanly possible to appease us

Wanted to take a closer look at how the bonus point requirements match up to stats from last season
--------

Last season no team averaged 5+ tries across the NRL season. Storm (4.7), Roosters, Cowboys, Rabbitohs, Panthers, Eels and Sharks averaged 4 or more (Sharks and Eels 4.1, rest in between).
The Warriors did average 5 tries conceded per game with Titans, Knights, Tigers, Sea Eagles, Bulldogs and Dragons all averaging at least 4 conceded. Cowboys, Sharks and Panthers concede less than 3 tries per game.

Five teams averaged 10 or more offloads - Eels, Raiders, Bulldogs, Sharks, Roosters. A further 4 teams averaged 9+ and only 3 teams averaged less than 8.
Broncos, Sea Eagles, Dragons, Sharks, Tigers all conceded 10+ offloads per game.

Four teams averaged 5 or more line breaks across the season - Storm, Sharks, Rabbitohs, Roosters
Only four teams didn't average at least 4.
Dragons, Tigers, Knights, Warriors, Titans, Eels, Bulldogs and Broncos all conceded 5+ line breaks.

As a guide it is kind of all out the window though as match ups are not even and how squads are used will differ wildly between games.

-----

To match up Sharks numbers vs our trial opponents (again, means **** all realistically as they are trials)
Sharks score 4.2 tries, concede 2.8 tries, linebreak 6 times, concede line break 3.9 times, offload 10.5 times, concede offload 10.5 times
Knights score 2.9 tries, concede 4.9 tries, linebreak 3.7 times, concede line break 5.6 times, offload 8.9 times, concede offload 9.6 times
Bulldogs score 2.8 tries, concede 4.3 tries, linebreak 3.1 times, concede line break 5.0 times, offload 11.5 times, concede offload 8.5 times

So we are well placed to pick up bonus points for line breaks especially, and also potentially tries. Offload we might get it but are equally as likely to also concede it, especially tough for that one vs Bulldogs. But again, that is all based on stats from wildly different circumstances.

Hate the idea of a pre-season comp. It should be used for preparation and giving potential younger players a run.
You can just still do that, only reason not to is you really want the 100k
I'd be inclined to do preseason as best suits sides needs and if you happened to win 100k then great.
Maybe in our last game if things are going well with 5 mins left and we are a chance you put some of your better offloaders back on to try snag that last bonus point or something. Maybe.
