Depth is a word I struggle with. It almost sounds condescending to a player, that there’s no hope in that player getting better.

I have often wondered how players feel about being “depth” in a squad.

Rookies probably are just happy to be part of the squad, but what about those who’ve got a few more years experience?

I wouldn’t think it’s a word used much within the squad, it’s mostly us punters and the media that use it.

Sorry to get off track but just wanted to share these thoughts.

Players and coaches use the word depth. it's not an insult, it's a necessary function. only 13 can take the field. most players have been it at some point in their career unless they are a superstar that has always started from U7's up to playing for Australia. But most players at some point have to bind their time from reserves or the bench

Depth does not mean a player can not get better whatsoever. if anything the opposite as being depth should motivate and focus them on what they have to improve to make the starting team

I spose through injuries or whatever if for example a player like Hiroti is appearing week to week do you still consider him depth? until they are clearly a superior option I would say so but he has that chance and was first in line to be given it

Jeff Robson should have been a depth player at most clubs but due to circumstances he was our main man and regular starter and he and the club made the most of it even if he was already aging and unlikely to get any better

Thanks Gards, that's a good response. Maybe it's just my weird personal opinion. If players and coaches use it then fine, no issues. :)

Don't get me wrong I don't think a player with any sort of ambition enjoys being depth and it will always hurt having a coach telling you didn't make the team this week but then again so did being picked last for the lunchtime soccer game at school even though you were better than most of everyone else

Katoa was depth
Jack Williams was depth
Kennedy was depth

but they worked hard and got their chance through injuries, suspensions, retirements ect and struggled initially but went away and worked hard on things and are now some of our best players picked every week without hesitation

hahaha was actually doing Chad a solid there, maybe replace Soccer with cricket for summer purposes

but when it came to lunch time tackle footy all the fat ****s got picked first, which kinda made sense when you were kids trying to tackle someone 5 times your size

funny thing was they picked all the fat ****s even when it was just touch footy

I was always last picked too but only because I was slow as. Only redeeming feature I had was being the intercept king - I took way more than anyone else and even when guys would yell out to watch out for me, I'd still take them.

And these were the days we played touch with a tennis ball!

Haha - your glory days!

We used to play touch with a tennis ball in the school playground in primary school. Tries were like the NFL - just had to break the plane, not place the ball.

Outside of the pass I didn't think he did much wrong. Definitely looks like the depth player he is. Maybe we can move on and get him back when he is Ikavalus age.
