Shut this one down mate. You guys can disagree, but please leave the personal stuff out of it.

I agree, but I guess the question is moreso about balancing the long term benefits of having those other guys playing at the right level.

18th/19th man might be the right spot for Metcalf this year.
Oh I get the question, and it’s a good one. I think he is just valuable enough to hold but it’s close.

You’re probably right, get him in the 18 as much as possible in case we need him, let the other guys play.
Is there still a rule like you can’t be 18th man two weeks in a row?
Maybe Miller could join the NRL team for prep/warmup etc a couple times too, keep Metcalf in Cup that week and maybe give Dykes a run

Since Metcalf is leaving at the end of this year, is it wise to invest in him?

No idea. I think Pele might have done a few in a row last season, but the bubble might have had special rules. Depending on individual player contracts there is probably bonus money involved for some players being named in the 19 so they probably probably don't mind. You'd think at some stage they'd want to get out playing, but I guess in Metcalf's case he doesn't need to impress anyone this year.

Changing the subject a little, something to consider...

- Kade Dykes has been killing in it Flegg as a 19 year-old, is playing for the Jets today, and just scored his first try.
- The SG Ball season is over for the Sharks, and their best player (and possibly the highest rated Sharks prospect) is their fullback Taukamo. He will almost certainly go up to play Flegg.
- Miller has been doing some great things with ball in hand for the Jets at both fullback and in the halves
- Rivett by all reports has hit the ground running in Flegg.

Is it worth re-considering Metcalf's request for an early release so we can invest time and effort in to the above players, or do we think Metcalf still has a role to play for the 2022 NRL Sharks? I reckon he currently sits as the 4th choice half and based on what I've seen of NSW Cup I think Miller may have jumped him as the second-choice fullback. If I am thinking long-term I would rather have Dykes/Miller playing spine positions this season that have Metcalf taking up a spot. Ideally Rivett gets a look at some stage too.
I can't see the harm in letting metcalf go early, it's probably more beneficial long term for the development of players like dykes.

You know my views on trindell and you'd know more then anyone mate the damage that can be done to young players if they aren't developed correctly

That's one factor why I wish we still got bellemy, just the use we'd get out of him developing our juniors, he'd have a field day with the size of our junior nursery

Ps burg, fitz is obviously taking notes from me, I bring up the fact trindell should play 80 for Newtown and the very next week he plays for Newtown 😝

I don’t consider using him if we need him an investment as such
Yeah I don't buy into the whole 'don't play him' if he has signed with another club, you play the best man for the job

But it is still a case by case scenario when talking about the release of a player and I think with metcalf it's a here nor there situation. We may get to a point where we need him but unless nicho is still there if it gets to the point Metcalf is in the nrl side something has gone very wrong

We can mould, 'develop and invest' as much into Metcalf as we want but that doesn't mean the warriors will benefit that much from it

There has been oodles of young players, especially halves who have come from well ran clubs who have failed at other clubs

prob Fifs last season with us, maybe Tolman and Wades too. is them getting picked holding back the development of other younger players, probably yes but they are picked based on getting wins in 2022 and I have no problem with that. Plus them being the in the team helps develop younger players around them showing them leadership, tips, support ect.

In addition if those players are helping us get wins it builds confidence for everyone in and around the squad

as for reggies well I spose the results matter less to an extent depending who you ask (Jets staffers wouldn't agree) and I relise Metcalf isn't there to lend his vast experience and leadership but regardless he is still depth with some limited FG NRL experience

Miller is a project player IMO, I think he needs a bit more time in reggies before we consider debutising him in NRL

As for the other players/combinations burgess mentioned well we could release Metcalf to speed up their development ect but what's the guarantee those players even get a start in our NRL squad in the future or that they don't sign with another club or ask for a release themselves anyway? Or that if they do get an NRL start that it's with the combination of players they played lower grades with

Halves chop and change all the time

I was about to say just keep Metcalf on the books incase we need him but don't play him in reggies
but then he losses match fitness and form

Personally I wouldn't release him until we are at such point that we 100% know we are not going to need him. But that point prob doesn't come until end of season or if he gets injured / has a massive form dive.

Metcalf showed promising signs last year, i think patience is key whether a player is leaving or not.
The future is still just that the future - still plenty of time for our up and comers to get things right

Former NRL champion James Maloney tests positive for banned substance

The 35-year-old reportedly failed a routine drugs test following a game for FC Lezignan XIII in the Elite One Championship, according to French publication L’Independant.

The case is reportedly yet to be processed by France’s anti-doping agency and his B sample is yet to be tested.

I think the Bulldogs try hard but some bad mistakes from a few players costs them every week.

The Tigers on the other hand have absolutely nothing. Madge will be either replaced by Flanno within next month or next year with Tim Sheens taking over for remainder of season.
