I like it. Something a bit different to our normal recruitment. Sounds like he is quick too. Could work in the Metcalf roll if he moves on.

Jack Gosiewski off to the dragons too. Great for us as he is trash.

7s Rugby is a strange sport. I've seen some players in the Australian team that would barely make it in Club Rugby or A Grade. A fair bit of politics and connections. It frustrates me every Olympics/Commonwealth Games watching it, when you think how easily we'd win a gold medal if they put a few league players.

Maybe this is some longer-term play with his player agents - Ignite Sports - who are linked to that football whisperer guy. https://www.ignitesports.com.au/team

Probably a train and trial and never heard from again...

Agree, don't mind a bit of left field recruitment. Guys got a bit to prove and experience. I like it. What i do want to see is a proper kicking coach appointed however.

Some highlights.

Didn't think of this until after I watched it but if anyone reads this and then watches it, how many of these highlights are against top rugby 7s sides instead of pleb sides
Hmmm. Not overly enthused.

Looks good in the "no tackle" world of Rugby but how will he go in the NRL.
I do like that he played League until 2022, inflated sense of self importance aside he should still have a pretty good understanding of what it takes to defend in league against men, and will be used to making a lot of tough one on one tackles even if things like volume of tackles and tackles on real big blokes* aren't well practiced.

*less of an issue in the backs

At a base rate he could be a reasonably low risk but high reward recruit.
His pace would work well to chase Graham kicks if they can get a combo going, and all the stepping and jinking can help pull the winger in towards him and open up space out wide.

Some highlights.

Thanks Burgess. He moves well and looks great in open play, but won't see much of that against 13 defenders. Nice to see we are thinking outside of the box and identifying a need for speed in our side. Hope he succeeds but won't have high expectations.

Sorry Bort, I disagree with that. Defence is just as important in the backs these days with decoy runners and wingers jamming in when they shouldn't.

Which centres/wingers are you thinking of that make high volumes of tackles and regularly against really big blokes?
Doesn't look like any made top 50 for average for the season.

I know some wingers and decoy runners are really big blokes, like D Fifita for example, but current NRL centres are already struggling to stop him when he decides to play so seems unfair to expect this fella to.

Also if he is at centre and the winger jamming in is the issue that really doesn't raise questions about Miller's defence (unless it is because the winger knows he can't defend...). If he is winger and jamming in when he shouldn't that is bad defence though, yes.

I didn't say defence in the backs isn't important.

Bold Number 1 - I wasn't thinking of any centres/wingers specifically, I was thinking in general. Sometimes they have to defend like forwards out there.

Bold Number 2 - answered your own question there mate.

Bold Number 3 - you said it was less of an issue, that sounds like it isn't as important to me.

So in general/across the board centres and wingers have to make a large volume of tackles against against the real big blokes?
What do you mean by sometimes they have to defend like forwards out there? For wingers in particular that was be very rare.

I didn't ask a question there, although I did use the word question. You're the one that brought up wingers coming in despite it having a pretty lose connection to my point at best. Regardless still not sure what you are getting at here, this guy may or may not be a good defender because wingers may or may not come in which may or may not be because this guy may or may not be a good defender is a bit too convoluted a conversation to try and have before we have seen him in action.

I didn't, I said making a large volume of tackles and against real big blokes was less of an issue in the backs.

Thanks for Chadsplaining my posts to me though

I don't mind the out of left field signing. He is probably not on much and has been playing centre in 7's.

Appears quick off the mark and is listed as 6 foot on an olympic games webpage I found. At least there is the potential he could be good! Just going to come down to how he will go in defense.....he gets found out with bad reads will be a problem.

Yep. Success there certainly doesn't mean it will translate to other levels.

For a point of reference, Sam Caslick was considered a "Rugby 7's Star" and tried to switch to League in 2018 with the Ipswich Jets in the Q Cup. He split time between centre and bench, was in and out of the top squad, and came back the following year as the team photographer.
