This was the first time I tried and pretty sure I could have had it if I didn't get confused and go back a screen
Yeah I've read a few articles about increased stock. The eb preorder went for hours as opposed to the mere seconds stock had sold out over the past months.

Tried to buy a PS5 this afternoon through Big W.
Want the disc version and this said online only so I thought might be the digital version
By time I went back and checked that online meant sale is online only and it was the disc version I couldn't add it to cart anymore, all sold out.
Maybe next year.

lol, sorry bort but that story is kinda funny. Do you really need Discs in a Covid / Digital era anymore mate?

does it even have anything to play on it yet other than old PS4 games with up scaled resolution?

Personally I prefer the disc as I often trade in games, can't do that on digital.

As for the catalogue it is still pretty slim. Was supposed to much improved but a bunch of games got delayed.

Half the time you can get the disc of games from JB like $20-30 cheaper than the digital game at release time (and I can go about 1 minute out of my way to drive home past a jb). Adds up quite a bit over time. I tend to buy digital when they are cheap on the PS store.
But if I didn't already have a lot of PS4 games on disc I probably wouldn't be fussed. There are a handful of games I would want to still be able play still (without having to set the ps4 back up) that I also don't want to buy again.

I don't play games but that sounds pretty stupid. Why would something tangible that needs manufacturing cost less than something digital?

Very strange.

Possibly because they have no necessity to move stock as it isn't physical? I'm not really sure about this. They often do sales where games are cheaper than retailers, but outside of those times they are always absolute max price.

Aside from that though, it's not unusual for things to cost more through a high-tier retailer. A TV is cheaper through Harvey Norman than Samsung, shoes are cheaper through footlocker than Nike, games are cheaper through JB than Sony.

It is stupid, for us. But it's down to the relationships Sony and MS have with retailers. If they undercut the EB's and JB's and took away their game sales business, they'd be given the arse and screw up their console distribution network, which they still need.

Xbox is close though. They have a Netflix of games with Game Pass. It's great value and is getting more and more high profile titles launching on it all the time. The writing's on the wall... and it's only a matter of time before retailers are shut out and it's all direct

I have the non disk version of the Xbox. Only downside is you can’t buy cheap games, but at the same time, you can’t flog off old games you don’t play anymore

Diskless ps5 appeared in Big W (online) today and sold out even quicker than the disk one the day before.
I didn't realise how much cheaper it was, if I get a chance I might just get it. I could have probably got one then if I had been at PC when it dropped, didn't have a big w account logged in on phone.
In saying that not like I'm in a big rush as I haven't even tried to get one before just recently and it's been out a while so I guess if there is another diskless drop I see next I will see how I am feeling at the time.

You on the Game Pass or buying digital copies?
I got 3 years free on game pass through a brilliant ozbargain loophole, so considering the diskless version

Official Sony Online store with official launch RRP vs. Retailer that can sell or do deal on the price as it pleases generally speaking. Physical stores are also motivated to clear physical stock holdings or sell X amount to get a supplier rebate or marketing spend for instance. That being said you can purchase digital downloads and game keys outside of the official Sony store AFAIK often with heavily reduced prices though I never bother.

When a game has been on market for a bit the Sony store will often have good sales and discounts offering prices same or better than physical disc versions in store. They also give away a couple free digital games every month on their store.

Don't think I have bought a physical copy of a game since like 2017 and the one I did ended up free on the store a few years later anyway. Also disc drives can break or jam over time and is slower to load data from a game disc than a modern SSD hardrive. My experience with Sony disc drives is that they are ****ing loud as well lol however I do still understand the appeal of getting something physical for your $$ you can hang onto and actually touch/collect.

If there isn't much price or spec difference I would prob go for the disc drive version of PS5 as well

Don't think the Sony one is lower spec

Like the PS4 I will prob wait until half wayish through the lifecycle before I jump in. By then supply isn't an issue, there is a good catalogue of games and they are doing deals on the consoles with bundles ect. Or I might just skip this generation all together. Would have to upgrade my TV to take advantage of alot of the new features as well but that isn't a big deal, decent TVs can be had cheap.

Yea I figured you might want disc drive on PS5 for backwards compatibility ect. of some of your PS4 games you had on disc. I haven't bought a full priced game at release in I couldn't tell you how long. I tend to download the deluxe versions or whatever 12 months + later on with a nice discount but the free games keep me going as well, I have way too many free games as it is over PS3 & PS4 that I havn't even gotten to yet plus epic store does weekly free games.

Helped keep me sane (relatively) during lockdown

Thats basically my plan, the main benefits being a lower price and they would of started working out the kinks with the consoles like they did with the PS4. The old rubber eject button on the PS4 is a good example of this. After about half a year they changed the button to a normal plastic button because the rubber button kept sticking due to the extra heat generated from the console itself, it kept ejecting game discs randomly. They saw there was an issue and changed the button on the next batch of consoles built. Just little kinks like that.

My original plan also but the ol ps4 has started getting a bit noisy and warm. I keep telling myself I will open it and try clean it out but that hasn't happened yet...

Yea and they usually come out with a slimmer version though I have one of the original fatty PS3's haha cause I bought early on in 2008

Btw for those of you that are not aware you can still get the free monthly PS5 games even if you don't have an actual PS5 yet. Log into your PSN account on your PC and you can add the free PS5 title to your library each month. (they are hidden from store view if you access PSN through your PS4)

Then once you have a PS5 you can go into your library and download the free games to your console - it's mostly been rubbish titles so far but it's better than nothing and gives you something to play and mess about with on your first day and no doubt better titles will start to be added so don't forget to log into PSN each month on your PC. And unfortunately no you cannot add free games from past months you missed out on :(

I've out of gaming for a long time, but just can't understand these console shortages
