I hope you guys like long reads and inside balls. This week I break down Chad Townsend's full 80 against the Raiders, in the following segments:

- First 25 minutes (A lot of ball for the Raiders, with some positive stuff from Chad but also a few mistakes)
- 15 minutes up to half time (Solid work from Chad, but some poorly timed mistakes from other players let the team down)
- 15 minutes after half time (Sharks withstand some pressure, and then Chad/Moylan/Graham each do their part to build pressure at the other end. It culminates in a nice try for Kennedy)
- Final 25 minutes (Chad takes control and is heavily involved. Some good late bench decisions from Bomber build momentum but the Sharks fall 2 points short)

I'm still re-reading it to fix up grammar and spelling as best I can. I'll post them up in the next few hours

All in all , not brilliant and not shocking apart from 3 near miss conversions

As someone who also cannot kick goals the kick out on the full was the worse mistake to me

that, or the 1 on 1 tackle against Kris

either way, not a good night for him

TBH if someone else was goal kicking I'd probably call it a pretty standard night for Chad.

One maybe two off passes (out of 56)
Some decent kicks, some mediocre kicks and one shocker (out of 14), and tbf most of his attacking kicks were pretty good
Defence a bit worse than you'd want, but pretty on par with rest of the team (all should have been better)
Direct involvement with a couple tries

Overall there are a handful of costly mistakes in there but he does touch the ball more than almost anyone else and as a half is targeted by opposition so much harder for him to have a perfect or near perfect game than most other positions. Especially as it is Chad.
And I still also think easier for him if Moyza can take on more responsibility.

Guess we will see more also when Burg drops an absolute wall of text on us with his breakdown.

First 25 Minutes

- Opening set, Raiders kick off. Sharks come out of their own end with forwards.
- Chad has a support run foe Uele on tackle 3
- Tackle 5, Rudolf ptb 2metres Sharks side of half way. Chad kicks on the back of a good ptb. A high kick from half way is fielded by CNK ~8m out (on the full) and is tackled ~15m out in the middle of the field.
- Chad makes a good tackle on Rapana on tackle 2, gets to first marker, chases hard, but someone else makes the tackle before he arrives. No more involvement in this set
- Next set starts 28m out from the Sharks line. Rudolf plays it on tackle 5 on the Raiders 40. Good ptb. Chad kicks high from 35 out. CNK takes it under good pressure and is tackled 11m out, 10m in from the sideline. Chad is involved again on tackle 2. The action doesn't come near him again this set, and the Raiders kick high down to Kennedy
- Set starts ~25m out. Chad fills in at dummy half on play one and then moves back in to position. Sharks go through the middle, then shift to Moylan who is tackled on the last 40m near the sideline. Chad kicks high from 45m out under a little pressure (but not much) and kicks out on the full!
- This gives the Raiders a good ball set and they are attacking the line by play 4. A blatant forward pass is let go on tackle 5, before the Raiders kick to a corner and get a repeat set after Ronaldo gets a Falcon and goes over the sideline
- Raiders get a set restart on tackle 1, and shift to the left. The ball goes past Chad and the play is shut down by Hiroti and Katoa, with Chad nearby in cover. He then gets to first marker, and the dummy half takes off sideways. Chad tries to grab him as he takes off, but doesn't get him. It probably counts as a missed tackle on the stats sheet but he was never really in a position to tackle the guy.
- Raiders don't really test the Sharks on this set, but George Williams puts in in the in goal. Chad gets back to cover and knocks it dead (with a bit of a fumble beforehand)
- Sharks drop it out and Raiders are tackle one 40m out. They keep the ball mostly in the middle third before a 4th tackle grubber. Chad moves back to cover the kick but Kennedy beats him there and heads up field, finds Hiroti and the Sharks are tackled 35m out. They immediately shift left and Chad's pass for Wade is dropped. Not a great pass, but definitely catchable. It's hard to tell, but the way it is thrown it looks like possibly wasn't actually meant for Wade. I think if he lets it go the ball probably goes to Moylan (though it probably doesn't hit him on the chest either). Either way, it's not a perfect pass from Chad, so he has to wear some responsibility there.
- Tackle 1 Chad is involved in a tackle from the scrum. He lets go once he knows someone else has a hold of the Raider. Again - could look like a miss on the stat sheet but isn't really.
- Raiders go through the middle, but do come left on play 4. Whitehead stops at the line and bounces off Chad, but Chad comes again and wraps him up with help from Uele. Again - not sure if this counts as a miss. He made the tackle eventually but when Whitehead stops Chad just holds his position. On the next play the Raiders get caught on the last a few metres out and it is Sharks ball again in the corner

***

11 minutes gone. They have survived the early pressure after the kick out on the full, and are back in to the arm-wrestle

***

- Play 1 Chad fills in at dummy half for a Katoa hit up. Sharks make pretty good yards and get a set restart on the 3rd. On play 2 Chad runs an unders play (a.k.a. "Chad inside ball") to Nikora who makes good metres. They then shift left after a good Woods offload, before coming back to the middle with another unders play, this time to Toby. They have gone 80 metres now.
- Toby gets a good quick ptb on the 20, Brailey takes off and is tackled by a marker who is nowhere near square, and Brailey drops the ball. Wade should have challenged this one. Raiders to feed the scrum
- Off the scrum Chad gets palmed off by Rapana as 2 other Sharks get him. This one would definitely go down as a miss. It didn't hurt the team in any way though. All 3 Sharks players arrived at the same time and Rapana stops and palms one as the other two swap him.
- Raiders ruck it out, sticking to the middle of the field, before bombing to Katoa. Replay shows Katoa was pretty clearly hit in mid air, but no penalty is given and the Sharks bring it out from their own end.
- Wade kicks from 35m out under pressure from Hodgson. It's a poor kick straight down the middle fielded by Rapana who is met by a group of in-front-of-the-kicker chasers in Chad, Nikora and Hiroti who have to wait back 10m. Rapana meets the chasers 35m out, beats Nikora and makes some more metres going wide. He is tackled by Katoa and Hiroti. Townsend is there in cover in case Rapara passes to his left.
- Hiroti then makes the mistake of chasing hard from marker, makes the tackle and is lying on his back on the next play. He slowly makes it back but the Raiders recognize this and come down that edge.
- The Sharks by now have numbers and should be able to shut this down, but Hiroti hasn't quite made it in to the right position and Whitehead gets the ball outside his line and goes past him easily. Townsend covers from the inside to make a good legs cover tackle at the same time Kennedy was arriving. Kennedy peels off Whitehead as he offloads to Rapana.
- Katoa makes a great tackle on Rapana with Kennedy half a step away. Raiders run it again on the 5th but get caught and don't make the Sharks pay

***

16 minutes gone. Sharks forced to sustain another wave of pressure, but no Chad mistakes here. You can put this period down to the missed penalty for marker not square, a poor kick from Wade, and some poor defence from both Nikroa and Hiroti.

***

-Sharks bring it out from their own end. A great play 3 run and quick ptb from Katoa leads to a right side shift. Moylan finds Chad, on to Nikora - who offloads to Chad - and then Townsend makes 15 metres before floating a pass over the top to Katoa. It takes a Raiders hand and the Sharks get 6 more. Katoa doing Katoa things... runs all the way back to where Chad started, and it is zero-tackle on the Sharks 40. Chad fills in again at dummy half for a Hiroti hit up
- Play 3 they shift left to Chad at speed, who find Moylan and then to Wade short. Next play they shift back to the right and Chad kicks short for Nikora. This play I didn't like. Either the outside backs stuffed up here, or Chad didn't let them know it was on. Nikora chased but then gave up once the Raiders player picked it up, and Chad chased through hard himself, both Hiroti and Katoa were slow to get there. The end result here is that Hiroti was that the winger flipped the ball to CNK, who beats Katoa and makes it to the 30 before Moylan covers across to shut him down.
- Raiders bring it out of their own end, before Scott uses Moylan as a turnstile on tackle 3 and makes it down to the Sharks 20. On the next play the Sharks get a hand to a Raiders pass and it's now zero-tackle 5m out. Raiders stick to the middle (or the Sharks do a good job of jamming in and keeping them to the middle). On the 4th tackle both and Nikora and Woods fall off Papallii, and it leads a a quick ptb and a Raiders 5 on 4 to the left (with the Woods defending 4 in). Wighton recognizes this and runs the ball. Sharks shut it down but both Woods and Townsend get up high on Wighton and give up a penalty.
- After a quick break and some magic water for Wighton we are good to go again. Raiders spill the ball on tackle one though, and the Sharks play it 10m out in front of their posts on tackle zero.

***

20 minutes gone. More pressure, this time a couple of Chad mistakes contributing - but again the Raiders don't make the Sharks pay. The middles are doing a lot of extra defence though, and we know that this ends up hurting them later this half

***

- Exit set begins with Chad filling in at dummy half again, and the backs bring it out. Katoa is having a big impact on these sets.
- Tolman is now on the field and gets involved twice later in the set, including on a Chad unders play. Play 5 is a Graham bomb. Raiders take it cleanly. Townsend is there on the chase but is shepherded out of play by a Raider.
- Canberra bring it out from their own end. The Sharks middles are starting to look tired. Toby throws a lazy arm out at Ryan James. Woods covers up but the quick ptb leads to a Raiders shift to the left, and a great kick by Kris down into the corner. The break and quick ptb means the shift forces Katoa up. Kennedy is isolated and the Raiders drag him in to the in goal. That one is on Toby
- Next set they work to the middle and then attack to the left edge on the 3rd tackle. It's 4 Raiders v 4 Sharks so should have been shut down easily. Instead they get caught in no-man's land. Nikora jams in, Townsend half follows him and Katoa makes the Umbrella, but Hiroti holds his line. Chad realises he's on his own and tries to make a legs tackle. He misses and Hiroti arrives too late to help.
- This try should never have happened. Townsend misses a tackle he should have made, so it's on him, but it's more the disorganised line that creates it. Either Nikora has to hold his line, or all four players need to follow him in. It's more the bad read that leads to the try than the simple missed tackle. If they slide in that situation instead of jamming they have plenty of numbers and they shut it down easily. It's hard to blame Katoa there - but the other three definitely were not on the same page.
- 6-0 Raiders. Jack Williams comes on for Rudolf (one minute too late unfortunately)

***

25 minutes in and it hasn't been a great start for Chad. He's put his team under unnecessary pressure more than once, and that would have contributed to his middles wearing down. Personally, I actually thought the worst play he had was the nothing grubber for Nikora, as much for the lack of a chase than for the kick itself. The kick out on the full I can deal with. The pass to Graham wasn't perfect but catchable, and the bad read could be put down to playing with an inexperienced centre. The high tackle wasn't great but they dropped it on the next play so in the context of the game it had no impact. That kick-and-no-chase though was a head scratcher. More on that later....

15 Minutes leading up to Half Time

- Chad is involved in one tackle on the Raiders set after the kick off, and on the next play Papallii offloads as he gets to him. Would probably go down as a miss. Raiders kick down, Sharks bring it away, get a penalty for high contact and then it's tackle one 40 out from the Raiders line. Sharks get only their second good-ball set of the match
- Chad is feeling his unders plays now. Play 2 he goes to Williams and then on the next play he dummies under to Woods and uses Tolman as the second runner underneath. Play 3 Chad is setup on the left and they shift wide left before Mulitalo runs out of real estate and has to come back in. The set ends with a Kennedy grubber being fielded by the Raiders just outside of their in goal. Nice end to the set.
- Canberra bring it out, with no real involvement from Chad in defence. Katoa is tackled on play 1 and Chad plays dummy half for the next two plays as the backs work it out again.
- On the third tackle an offload leads to Chad finding Nikora running a good unders line, and going straight through the middle. Kennedy supports well but throws a poor pass at the end of it to turn it back over to the Raiders.
- Bit of a mad scramble on the next set. Woods is called offside, Tolman misses James and they go straight through. Next play they shift left and Katoa knocks a pass in to touch. Good scramble by the whole right edge. Six-more to the Raiders
- After restart the Raiders keep the ball in the middle of the field, and drop it on tackle 3.
- Chad fill in at dummy half again for a couple of plays as they bring it out again through wingers and then the bench forwards. Play 4 Chad beings Nikora under again. He gets a good quick ptb and Chad bombs from about 35m out. A good chase keeps the Raiders about 13m out from their own line on tackle 1, and keep them down there well.
- After the Raiders ruck it out and kick it, a great kick return from Katoa sees the Sharks start their set just inside their own half.
- Chad gets to dummyhalf again for a Hirito hit up and then after a Nikora hit up they run a a blind side shift through Townsend and then Kennedy. He is tackled about 25m out and then they go two long passes back to the middl via Chad and then Brailey. Uele plays is 20 out centre field on the last. Townsend wraps around to the left and puts it in to the in goal. A good cahse gets the Sharks a drop out. Things are looking up!!!!!
- Never mind- Tolman dropped it. ****! James collects the crumbs and surrenders to Townsend in the tackle.
- Townsend makes another tackle before heading back in to position. Raiders shift that way 2 tackles later but Townsend and Hiroti shut it down. Raiders kick to the in goal and get themselves another set
- Sharks stand tall on the next set. Raiders get caught on the fifth. It's a handover, and yet again Katoa makes great yards out of their end
- Chad runs another unders play to Tolman on the third coming out of trouble.

***

I am noticing that a lot of these unders plays come before a kick. Bomber must think there is something strategic about forcing defences to adjust to this play on the 4th so you have space, or it could just be that they like kicking from a specific spot and an unders play is a good way to just move across a few metres. Probably a little of both if I had to guess. What is very noticeable is that the play before a kick is almost always one of Rudolf, Williams, Nikora or Tolman. Those guys are obviously the best as getting a quick play 5 ptb

***

- After the good setup, Chad takes the ball on the run, kicks from 55 out and it goes over the fullback's head. He leads the chase, makes the tackle and pins the Raiders 5m out. Great play. Raiders work it out and Townsend is involved in a tackle on the 4th. Raiders kick from half way and Mulitalo its tackled 25 out from the Sharks line
- Chad brings Nikora under on the 4th and then sweeps left. They shift left via Tolman to Chad on the last. Chad finds Moylan who has 3 runners or the kick to to choose from and he passes it to Sir Walter.
- Townsend covers back and contests the ball with Scott. The touchie is out of play (he is 20m away as he was following in line with Mulitalo) and the ref misses a pretty obvious knock on from Scott. Good work from Townsend to get back but a 50/50 call goes against them. You know the rest: Moylan misses Young for the 4th time this half, and its 12-zip at half time.

***

40 minutes gone. All in all this was a very good 15 minutes for Chad. His kicking was perfect as was his chasing, he defended well (but wasn't tested much) and he had a hand in Nikora ripping straight through the Raiders. He built pressure through this period really well, but a simple mistake from Tolman let the Raiders off the hook in their one good opportunity, and 45 seconds of poor football from Moylan digs the Sharks deeper in to the hole

15 Minutes After Half Time

- Sharks kickoff to start the second half. Raiders work it down, kick to a corner and Katoa is tackled 27m out. Townsend gets to dummy half for play one to Hiroti, who drops it in the tackle.
- Raiders hit the left edge from the scrum. Townsend and Hiroti shut it down
- 2 tackles later the Raiders hit the same edge. Wighton takes on Townsend, who pushes him towards the corner. Help arrives from inside in Nikora and Williams and also from the outside backs. Katoa gets called for a strip - which is a mistake from the referee, since Katoa was attempting to stop a try. After bagging him last week I want to call out the good defensive work from Jack Williams here. He numbers up really well and gets across to help. He also made a fantastic legs tackle earlier in the set
- Raiders work it back to the middle, get a set restart on tackle 2 but drop it on that play. No involvement from Townsend in defence.
- Sharks work it away after the scrum, get a set restart on tackle 1, and make it almost to the Raiders 40 on the last. Brailey throws a bludger off a pass and it is dropped by Townsed. 100% on Brailey that one. Awful pass that Townsend had no chance on.
- On the next set the Raiders work it down to the Sharks line and get another six after Moylan fails to field a grubber. Townsend isn't involved in defence
- From theh scrum, Wighton goes at Townsend and steps on the inside, but help arrives in the form of Brailey, and Wighton loses the footy. Again this probably goes as miss for Chad, but it's just a good example of the defensive system working. Chad is sliding right and when Wighton steps back across the grain Brailey is where he is supposed to be.
- Chad takes the 20m tap, but Hiroti drops it again
- Raiders go to the left again from the scrum. Chad is involved in the tackle, with help from a couple of players. They shift right, and then back to the left. Good defence from the whole right edge. Nikroa gets Wighton and forces a poor pass. Rapana dives on it and Chad arrives to push him in to touch.

***

Very scrappy mistake-filled opening to the half from both teams. Can't really judge Townsend on anything here other than to say his edge did well to shut down a few Raiders attacks. Sharks hardly had the footy during this period

Hiroti is hooked for Tracey

***

- Sharks get to half way working it out. With good service and not much kick pressure Townsend kicks a high floating bomb from 55 out and it is dropped by CNK centre field just in front of the 10m line
- Sharks take a couple of one-out runs before shifting right via Townsend to Kennedy. Raiders shut it down.
- Sharks come 2 passes back to the middle via Chad/Blayke and then Tolman takes a run. Next play they go to Townsend again, who brings Nikora under (unders play yet again on play 5). Townsend wraps around to the left and goes through the hands to Moylan. A good kick gets the Sharks another set (3rd set in a row)
- Next set we get Chad setup on the left and giving an inside ball to Tolman on tackle 2. He then heads back to the right and Moylan sweeps around to setup outside him. A good shift goes through the hands and Tracey runs a good line off Kennedy. The ball comes back to the middle with Townsend, who switches the play back to Katoa, but the Raiders shut it down.
- Again we go 2 passes back to the middle for an unders play before the kick - this time to Williams. Moylan is first receiver and passes to Graham for another kick in goal and another drop out. 4 sets in a row now, with results off kicks from Chad, Moylan and Graham. Sharks are building pressure nicely
- Next set starts with 2 good runs from middles, and then Chad starts on the left and finds Moylan. He dummies and makes a good run. Chad is back in the middle now, and on the next play dummies under to Rudolf, then kicks for Kennedy at speed for a great try

***

At this point I stopped the replay and went back to watch the first kick I was critical of earlier. This is exactly the same set that they ran earlier, with the same short kick (middle, middle, shift left, shift right for a grubber to the right of the uprights). The first time around Kennedy is out of play on the left side of the ruck, and Chad looks to always be kicking. The outside players though just don't look like they are on the same page. They are deep rather than flat, and other than Nikora they all chase through like they are in a recovery session jog. Clearly a communication issue on that one. This Kennedy try is what that set was supposed to look like.

Best period in the game as a team here. They got results on their kicks, they tested the Raiders on both edges, they held the ball, and they finished with points. Good play by the whole spine + Graham to build pressure and get results. Again good quick ptb's from Williams to setup the shifts.

Final 25 Minutes

- Raiders kick off and Sharks bring it out of their end with 5 forward rucks. Toby plays it about 40 out and Townsend sends it high from about 43m out. Raiders take it cleanly and are tackled about 15 out in front of their posts. Then Rapana throws a nothing pass to Whitehead, runs in to him, and it is Sharks ball 20 out.
- Sharks go to the right from the scrum through Chad, Moylan and then Kennedy, who is tackled a few metres out. We get two passes back to the middle again through Chad and Brailey, before Brailey finds Uele underneath.
- Ref calls time off for Wighton.

***

I don't have a problem with the ref stopping the game for a player who is visibly dazed. As a side note though - in the Q Cup if play is stopped for a player in the defensive line, and he stays on the field - it is six more. That might be a rule worth considering in the NRL. Not that it would have made much difference for the Sharks here on tackle 1.

Back to the action...

***

- A minute or so later Chad comes to the left side and brings Williams underneath back to the middle. They take 2 more plays to the middle, then on the 5th Brailey finds Chad on the left, he dummies to kick and tries the Harbour Bridge pass to Mulitalo. Unfortunately for the Sharks, Dugan jumps up to take the pass and robs his winger of a try. Nice quick play the ball from Rudolf and a good pass from Chad which could have (should have) led to points. Can't blame Dugan too much on the play though.
- Raiders bring it off their line, Townsend isn't involved in defence, they kick, and the Sharks play it on tackle one 25 out.
- They get close to half way wit outside backs doing the dirty work, and Brailey kicks.
- Chad leads the chase by a mile, but pulls up and waits for the line to catch up. Nikora and Katoa make the tackle (Tracey had played the ball so wasn't in the chase line).
- Raiders bring it out. Raiders player walks off the mark and makes Toby "not square". Takes Toby out of play and they go 20m up the middle before Nikora and Townsend shut it down. Geez walking off the mark gives me the ****s. Raiders kick to a corner and bat it back. Moylan cleans up for tackle 1 about 15m out from their own line.
- On 3rd tackle they shift right to Chad, who dummies and pokes his head through but the cover defence gets him. They hold on to him forever but no set restart is awarded
- Last tackle Townsend kicks from 45 out and it is fielded 10m out in front of the posts by CNK. He's tackled about 28m out. A bit of a weak end to the set. Chad's kicking was really good for the second half, and this wasn't a poor kick, but the chase wasn't strong (players were there but not in a line) so it made it a poor result.
- Keeping them down their own end works again though, the Raiders spill it on tackle 3, and lose a challenge

***

Sharks still in the arm wrestle. Townsend heavily involved in attack, kicking, and kick chase

Thumbs up to Bomber here for a very smart late interchange, as Magoulias comes on to the field. Typing out the breakdown of the last 17 minutes I felt he had an impact in every set

***

- Townsend turns it under for Billy on tackle 2 and he makes good yards with great leg drive. Next tackle Townsend swings to the left, takes the ball to the line, dummy to Rudolf, and Rudolf is hit on suspicion. Sharks take the 2
- Townsend catches the kick off on the full and uses Katoa. Sharks then make great metres off a good run from Billy and then an offload from Toby. Raiders hold on to the ball in the ptb and Graham earns a penalty. Townsend rushes in to grab the ball and quickly kicks to touch
- They set up a really nice shift on play 3, first through Magoulias and then Townsend before Kennedy goes wide. Unfortunately Kennedy throws a pass to his winger that he shouldn't have, and poor Katoa gets bundled in to touch. Raiders bring it out and kick the ball in to touch just outside the Sharks 20m line. Sharks bring it out through outside backs.
- On the 2nd tackle Chad gets the ball on the right and finds Nikora running a great line. He pokes his head through but loses the ball trying to offload to Tracey. Good play by Townsend.
- Raiders keep it in the middle and lose it on the 3rd. Sharks play it on zero-tackle on their own 20.
- Sharks bring it out, another Rudolf offload leads to an opportunity down the left edge, but a sloppy Graham pass followed by a poor decision from Dugan leads to them being taken in to touch
- Never mind though... the Raiders drop it on tackle 1 again (good tackle Magoulias). A push and shove contest ensues. Townsend gives Hodgson a cuddle, and the ref decides the Sharks will get a penalty
- Next set Townsend comes to the middle, to bring Rudolf under on play 2, and then starts a shift on the next play finding Moylan out he back. Tracey gets tackled, and who could ever have guessed what happens next? That's right - dummy half to Townsend, then Brailey, then an inside ball to a forward. Sharks are back in the middle.
-Next play Brailey runs and engages the markers, then props and passes a long pass to Townsend who is on the left. He kicks to the corner, Dugan scores after a long replay, Chad misses the kick, and we go back for a kickoff with just under 6 minutes to play.

***

Good passage here of involvement by Townsend, and a well placed kick at the end for points (with a little bit of luck).

***

- Coming out of their end the Sharks run through the middle, until the 4th tackle when yet another good run and fast ptb from Magaloulias sets up a shift to the right for Townsend. He throws a long cut out pass to Tracey, who slips as he catches it and is held. Chad then lets go a bomb from 45 out. It lands mid field near the 30m line, the Raiders don't contest it and Billy busts out the soccer skills for a second kick. Young just beats Wade on the chase and is tackled a couple of metres out from his own line. Another positive end to the set for the Sharks
- Raiders ruck it out, kick on the last and Ronnie gets tackled about 5 short of half way. A couple of tackles later the Sharks shift right again via Billy, Chad, Moylan and then a straight running Tracey. He is tackled one on one and gets a quick ptb. They then immediately shift the other way. Chad first, then Moylan who has swung back around to the left. Moylan is tackled.
- This looks a hell of a lot like that middle, middle shift shift, short kick set we've seen already... .and yep... Chad kicks it at the goal post pad. Raiders cover up nicely though and are tackled inches out.
- Chad chases and makes the tackle on his own kick, makes the next tackle from marker, and then a third in a row for good measure after a couple of guys fall off Kris. He stays on the ground and is out of the next play, but runs back in to position on the blind side ready for the following play the ball.
- Raiders pass to the open and kick from their own 40. Ronaldo takes it and almost runs out, but Dugan helps keep him stay in.
- Again they shift right via Chad after a couple of plays. This time he finds Nikora short, barks some orders, and then Brailey comes straight back to him. He finds Magoulias running under, and Billy switches the play to Tracey on the blind
- 5th tackle Chad dummies to kick and then shifts left to Moylan. The dummy kick plus a good outside decoy run Uele, plus and the winger having dropped back...makes it a 5 on 2 for the Sharks.

***

This is Chad's last involvement in the game (other than the kick at goal), but I want to break down this play anyway.

***

- Moylan has the ball after setup from Chad and Uele. He's 23m out just to the left of the post, with Graham, Dugan and Katoa lined outside him, and Kennedy out the back. The Raiders had just Williams and Scott in defence, with Young on his bike after moving in to cover Uele. CNK and the right winger (Simonsson) are dropped back.
- Williams comes out of the line to try to rush Moylan. He could draw and pass to Graham and make it a 3 on 1 (with Raiders pushing hard from inside) but he goes out the back to Kennedy. The winger jams in hard though and collects Dugan. Everyone else slides and sends Kennedy in to touch as he flicks to Ronaldo and there is a scramble near touch. In hindsight, the play he is probably short to Graham, who can then either use Kennedy inside or Dugan outside as a support runner. In the end though, the Raiders did a great job of scrambling - and the Sharks were very lucky to get the penalty, because even though Simonsson definitely collected Dugan, he was in front of Kennedy at the time and was never a chance to get the ball. Or... you might say the Sharks were unlucky, since the touch judge had actually told the ref that the ball had gone in to touch off the Raiders. Who knows what happens there with a fresh set of six.
- Again, you know the rest... Chad misses the kick, Moylan tries to kick a 60m field goal and it is all over.

For all of the complaining we see about Chad, this was a performance I'd liken to a lot of games from SJ's last season where he was given plenty of 3-2-1 votes, or one of the Maloney "get it wrong, get it wrong, get it right, what a player" games. His first 20-25 wasn't strong, but from the 25th minute on he built pressure nicely, and when the game was on the line he was the guy driving the bus. The Sharks didn't look like breaking the line except on plays he was involved in, and after that grubber in the first half his kicking game was faultless. There is no way I would give him points in the 3-2-1, because his first 25 cost the team and because the game was played mostly through the middle third - but I can say for certain that he was among the Sharks best players from minute 25 on, and without him on the field the score almost certainly shows 0 to the Sharks at full time.

Cheers burgo great effort mate. Certainly provides a bit more to unpack than "Chad is a **** ****" but hey we all watch the game differently I suppose.
