Some snips from article https://www.sharks.com.au/news/2020..._pjVzfvGxJubB0TgG2AASRkKff2ckdIP-mOhSzsmUzgx0

The Jets took decisive control in the game’s second quarter with tries to Royce Hunt in the 19th minute, Addison Demetriou (29th minute), Jackson Ferris (33rd minute) and the powerhouse Kayleb Milne on the stroke of halftime. Braydon Trindall converted all four tries for Newtown to take a commanding 24-6 lead into the break.

Matterson commended those players on debut for the Jets on Sunday – John Olive, Zac Woolford, Kyle Paterson, Brock Gray and Royce Hunt.

He also praised those players on duty on Sunday who had played in one or both of Newtown’s 2019 finals victories – Jackson Ferris, Billy Magoulias (who reprised another of his miracle kicks yesterday), Braydon Trindall, Jayson Bukuya, Teig Wilton, Siosifa Talakai, Wes Lolo and Daniel Vasquez.

Tries to Hunt, Ferris and Milne is good to see

Where is Trindall? He's named in NRL reserves but completely out of Newtown Jets?

He’ll most like just get swapped into the team when the NRL squad is trimmed down, same as Hunt & Mags.

NSW Cup doesn’t have the same rules around only playing those named in initial squad.

all reserves and reps cancelled

To add some detail here...

NSW Cup is suspended until 31 May. If/when they resume the Warriors will not participate in the remainder of the competition.

All junior footy suspended until at least 1 May.

Similar story in Qld, with slightly different dates. Q Cup to resume on 6 June, juniors on 2 May.

Article about Zac Woolford. I've tidied up the formatting a bit.

https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2020/...newtown-jets-throw-zac-woolford-nrl-lifeline/

When Zac Woolford was told his services would not be required at the Newcastle Knights this year, he headed back home to Canberra thinking his NRL dream was over. “I went back to Canberra during the off-season with nothing,” he told NSWRL.com.au. “I wasn’t sure what I was going to do.”

He had already made two other pit stops in his hopes of making it to first-grade at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Raiders. But they too turned out to be just that – pit stops – and soon enough, still unwanted, he was off to his next destination.

“It’s been tough,” Woolford said. “There’s definitely times there where you doubt yourself and wonder if it’s ever going to happen.”

The signs were promising early after he joined Canterbury on a two-year deal off the back of a stellar season with the Raiders in the Holden Cup in 2016. Woolford was nominated for the Dally M Holden Cup Player of the Year Award, finishing the season with 144 points, four tries and 23 line break assists. Two years later he hoisted both the NSW Cup and NRL State Championship in the air as he helped the Bulldogs to memorable wins in both matches. Still, he was let go.

An opportunity rose at Newcastle and Woolford got straight into training, bypassing the opportunity to take a break and return to pre-season duties later after playing finals into October with Canterbury. Again, he packed up his things and was on the road but this time he admits he was not sure where it was heading.

Woolford admitted that he thought his first-grade dream may be over as he headed back to the nation’s capital. “(It) was probably more did I want to keep pursuing it,” he said. That’s when the Newtown Jets stepped in.

“I got a call from Greg Matterson, the Newtown coach, and after a couple of chats with him he got me wanting to play footy again,” Woolford said. “You really want to play for him, he’s really good at getting that out of his players. “It was ‘Matto’ (Matterson) that got me back and I’m really stoked with that decision.”

Running out for the Jets in their opening round clash against the Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval, Woolford was not sure late last year that he would be able to say that he would be back this time around. He now joins his fourth club at just 23 years old.

Asked how he has been able to cope with the transient nature of his career, Woolford says no matter where he is, the longing to fulfill a lifelong dream has always been there. “Getting that first-grade debut, that’s been the goal since I started playing footy,” he said. “Nothing changes there. “You’ve just go to be willing to keep working hard and I’ll go wherever the opportunity comes up.”

I think he is still a way off an NRL start, pretty sure he was named on the bench (Paterson starting) before games got postponed.

yeh he was, he started the game though in round 1

doesnt really matter when you run 2 9's for 40 minutes

woolford has a bit better running game so the plan may have been him on tired forwards

NSWRL has announced that they are aiming for a restart to community Rugby League on July 18 with training starting around July 1. That includes juniors and some lower grades, but for NSW Cup (which was cancelled) they are looking in to an alternative format for those players.

QRL has said they are sticking with a tentative June 1 resumption for community footy.

Why did the NSW Cup cancel so early? Was it to save clubs paying players or something?

NSW Cup requires players coming up and down from other comps. It increases the exposure risk, specifically for an NRL player who goes down.. as he may now be coming in to contact with non-professional players for whom there was no enforcement of isolation. Without NRL top-30 players in their squads there are several tams who would have struggled to name a 17 (e.g. Newcastle and Penrith).

Qld Cup was moreso because of travel restrictions, as while NRL players do participate the teams all have full 20+ man squads of non-NRL players.

I expect (purely my speculation) that the NRL will figure out a way to get more players involved (more interchanges or extra emergency subs) and make a rule that once anyone plays in a lower grade they have to stay there for the rest of the year or go through a testing/quarantine process to move up.

Thanks for that.

Yeah, that makes it difficult at both ends. I guess at this point those things can probably be managed but it's difficult.

Forgive me for saying 'I told you so' Snowman but I talked this bloke up at the startt of the year and you bagged him. At least you are starting to realise you really have absolutely NFI, which is something most of us have picked up on by now.

bump - dropped way down the pecking order for being ordinary
