TRAVIS Burns's scintillating start to the NRL season has caught the attention of Queensland selectors, who have earmarked the Manly five-eighth as a potential State of Origin representative.
Burns, 22, has made an immediate impact for the Sea Eagles this season, forming a formidable halves combination with new recruit Matt Orford.
The two were instrumental in orchestrating Manly's comeback 30-22 win against Sydney Roosters last night, with Burns crossing seven minutes from full-time to secure the victory for the home side.
Brisbane's Darren Lockyer and North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston are likely to fight it out for the Queensland No.6 jersey, as both have been in tremendous early season form.
But despite playing only five first grade games, Burns has made an impression on Maroons selectors.
"I thought his performances of the past couple of weeks have been interesting," Queensland selector Alan Smith said.
"Running in towards selection time, who knows what happens."
Smith was actually at the Sharks-South Sydney match last night, but drove to Brookvale Oval to pick up fellow Maroons selectors Gene Miles and Des Morris and caught most of the later game.
While the trio was looking primarily at the form of the likes of Steve Bell, Chris Flannery and Ashley Harrison, they were also keen to see more of Burns.
"I thought his competitiveness over the past couple of weeks has been excellent. Long term, who knows," Smith said.
"Unfortunately these days we don't have the volume of players that New South Wales does, so it's always good to have a look at Queenslanders playing at the elite level in the NRL and keep an eye on them.
"Who knows, he is probably not in contention at this stage, but probably long term."
