We Deserve Better Than This Council!

After attending the public meeting of the Planning Assessment Commission for the proposed Sharks development, I have to say that the level of disdain and disappointment I have for Sutherland Shire Council has reached an all time high.
After reading the council's damning report and sitting through the speeches of many opponents to the development, it was clear that they all felt the protection of the mangroves in the area was of vital importance, "a natural resource that must be saved!" And fair enough too, I say.
However, there was just one problem; on my way to the meeting, I drove east along Captain Cook Drive and opposite Cronulla Golf Club, the Council are in the process of ripping out hundreds of metres of mangroves, the bare stumps left exposed for all to see. Is it just me or is there some hypocrisy here?
When a speaker brought up this distressing fact, he was shortly followed by a fired up Deputy Mayor, George Capsis who, amongst other outrageous claims in his rant, made the following amazing statement, "Well! I'm not happy about the removal of those mangroves and I'll have something to say about that!"
Ummm, it seems to me that it might be a bit late to say something about it now, George! What are you going to do...replant them all?
Maybe you should have been doing your job and paying more attention when the Council approved this destruction in the first place.
Apparently the mangroves are only important when they relate to projects the Council opposes. At least the Sharks have made a written commitment to protect the mangroves in their care!
The sooner we can vote this mob out the better.
